Late rally pulls Cardinals past Cal State-Northridge

EDINBURG - Lamar University scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a come-from-behind 6-4 win over Cal. State-Northridge Sunday afternoon in Edinburg Stadium on the final day of the Citrus Tournament.

Lamar, after dropping games to No. 22-ranked Oklahoma State (5-2) and Illinois-Chicago (9-8), improved to 1-2 on the season. Cal. State-Northridge dropped to 6-3 overall and went 2-1 in the Citrus Tournament, posting wins over McNeese State (4-3) and host Texas-Pan American (5-3).

The 1-2 Cardinals return home to host Holy Cross in a three-game series beginning with Saturday's 1 p.m. doubleheader in Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals and Crusaders will close the series Sunday at 10 a.m. The early start time is to accommodate Holy Cross' travel plans back home to Massachusetts.

The Holy Cross series also starts a stretch in which Lamar will play 19 of 20 games at home.

Trailing 4-2, the Cardinals started their rally with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Erik Kanaby, who was 3-for-5, singled with two outs. Ryan Baker followed with an RBI double to right field to pull the Cardinals within one, 4-3.

Michael Ambort, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single to left field. After Dan Hernandez flied out, Jeff Vickers walked.

Following David Moore's flyout, Brian Lloyd doubled to right field to drive in both Ambort and Vickers. Travis Dunson reached on an error by shortstop Jason Dabbs, which allowed Lloyd to score and give Lamar the lead at 6-4.

Brad Depoy (1-0) pitched the final two innings to pick up his first career win at Lamar. He didn't allow a run or hit and struck out two, both coming in the top of the ninth inning.

Brian Sisk started for the Cardinals, allowing one unearned run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in six innings.

Lamar started the scoring with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Ambort singled to lead off the fourth and stole second. Vickers, who was 2-for-2, doubled to right field to drive in Ambort with the game's first run.

Dunson led off the fifth inning with a single to right field and stole second base. He moved to third on Kanaby's groundout to first base. Baker drove in Dunson with a sacrifice fly to left field to put Lamar up 2-0.

The Matadors cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Todd Shelton led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on Alex Bardeguez' single to left.

Sisk got Amiel Traynum to ground into a double play. But, Kris Kasarjian reached on a fielding error by Baker at second base, which allowed Shelton to score.

Cal. State-Northridge scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead. Richard Cates led off the inning with a pinch-hit single off reliefer Scott Meyer. C.J. Belanger, who was 3-for-4, followed with a single to right field, and Dabbs loaded the bases with a bunt single.

Cates scored on a wild pitch by Meyer to tie the score at 2-2. Bardeguez was hit by a pitch from Justin Walker, Lamar's third pitcher of the game, to reload the bases. Traynum reached on a fielding error by Lloyd at shortstop, which allowed Belanger to score.

Dabbs scored on a double steal attempt, crossing the plate before Bardeguez was thrown out at third base.

Edwin Quirarte started for the Matadors, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk in five innings. Mark Haderlein (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing one run on no hits with one walk in one-third of an inning.

Lamar pounded out 11 hits, compared to seven by CSUN, including netting three doubles. The Cardinals' pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts, and both teams committed three errors.

Kanaby, Vickers, Lloyd and Moore have all hit safely in the first three games for the Cardinals, and Kanaby has an eight-game hitting streak dating back to last season.
