AAU TEACHINGS????

My view of AAU is ....its all OFFENSE and one on one skills.  Is defense ever taught? In AAU do you ever see full court pressure? 

AAU = NBA ALL Star Game

AAU = McDonald ALL American Game

AAU = NO DEFENSE

IMO, in AAU the stakes are not as high compared to High School in regards to team vs individual. Defense is talked about but not  taught or EMPHASIZED as much as it should be. A lot of kids  don't understand that if you can't OR won't play defense you are not a basketball PLAYER you are just someone playing basketball.

It's not a allstar game in AAU you have five player on the floor that can play on both sides of the ball.High School you have 1 or 2 player that can play both on the floor.In AAU if you can't play you will get exposed in High School at any level you can hide weakness.There are a lot of High School teams that can't compete on the circuit.

AAU basketball depends on the coach, and what he believes the kids need to improve upon in the summer. If you don't teach defensive habits and proper skill defense, the coach isn't doing his job at maximizing the time he has with the players

It's the devil. Defense is stressed more  when the teams play in league play with the shot clock.

Playing by AAU rules any and probably ever High School team would struggle to compete. AAU has Unlimited practice time, no school constraints and the fact that you can have your pick of kids from any geographical area certainly makes it  easier to build a team. The comparison is not even apples to oranges, but more like apples to watermelons.

Teachings?  Surely you jest. 

The little AAU I've seen is as follows:  Can't play defense...otherwise wouldn't be able to snowbird (and get a dunk).  And when the 5 defenders beat the ball down the floor, normally the person that crosses half court with the ball is using some 1 on 1 moves to try to score.  Normally everyone else stands out of the way.. That was my take on it anyway.  I probably won't be watching any "AAU" ball anytime soon.

I catch a fair amount of college games though.  Both TV (of course) and in person.  For a while, skill was on the down slide and athleticism was on the rise.  However...I think skill is catching up to athleticism.  I think the reason is the shot clock.  It forces kids to become scorers because when you only have a set amount of time each possession you have to have players than can score.  College coaches are recruiting more and more really athletic kids that have the ability to score.

The more I think about it, the more I really wish they would put in the shot clock in high school.  Who want's to see a team full of defensive specialists that stall because they can't score.

I love when people tell me "my kid/grandkid is a really good defensive player".  Oh you mean they suck on offense?  Can't shoot or dribble?.. haha

One more thing AAU will coach a player talent and fit him or her in the offense base on there talent not fit a player into there system just because that the system is what you run.Somebody draw up a play base on game situation and not 3 plays you learn in practice.AAU UAA  FANTASTIC

I have never met a college coach who talked about defense. They can teach you that. They want somebody who has the potential to score or create a score.

You can teach anybody anything but if a kid doesn't recognize or acknowledge the Importance of playing defense, then that lesson is for naught. Most kids want to #1 score 20 points , then #2 win the  game. But they fail to realize if you score 20 and the guy you're guarding scores 25 and your team loses what did you accomplish.

I am not knocking AAU ball....I think its great that kids can continue to play organized ball year around

Yep, both have their pros and cons . The master teacher recognizes this and get both to fit as close as possible to work in their system.

To piggyback off of 5gallon there are elements of AAU that are good but there are things that are  not conducive to making High school players or High school basketball better. I am a basketball junkie and AAU has its place, but in most cases it is better suited to be the roof and not the foundation.
