If that is the case then I just lost more of my already deteriorating regard for Sumlin - if you let a player any player dictate the terms of his alliance to the program - specially when it comes to hiring or firing coaches - it is just a disaster just waiting to happen. Maybe he will bring back Sherman to run the O. Every player transfers after the season is complete including bowls. This year with Knight, Allen, and maybe Murray is the first time I remember players leaving before the season is complete. The Knight transfer is the craziest. He is one hit on Mayfield from having a chance to lead his team to a national championship. How can he leave before the playoff and miss out on that chance? Cougar14.2
Same for baseball. If he left now, he would lose 2 years of baseball if he went D1. I think he could play in JUCO. I know the D1 baseball players leave at semester all the time - grades, playing time, etc...They end up at San Jac and play over the kids that played there during the Fall. I think all the NCAA sports have the same rules when making lateral transfers. Kids don't really redshirt in baseball due to the limited number of scholarships but I would think that if he left at semester he would technically have 5 years to play 4 given he's never suited up for A&M. Given he's burned a semester of that 5 years, at some point he would have to be enrolled in no more than 11 credit hours for a semester so that it doesn't count against the 10 full semester you get to play 4 years. The reason guys go JUCO is because no matter what level of the NCAA you come from you're immediately eligible once you get there and you're immediately eligible when you transfer out given you're in good academic standing. It also gives you a chance to be re-recruited if you left for a reason such as playing time.

Cougar14.2
If I'm Sumlin I say the heck with both Kyle and Kyler and fly my swagcopter down to Channelview, TX and try to flip Jalen Hurts from Alabama. With how hard 'Bama is going after Shea Patterson I think Hurts could be ripe for the picking but they would need to hurry because he's an early enrollee and will probably be signing his financial aid agreement soon.If you make no headway with Hurts then you take the short trip from the east side to the north side and try to flip DSC from Arizona State. Even that has loopholes in it because you're given credit for up to 12 summer school hours per year. You get 10 semesters to play 4 years as a full time student. One semester you would be a part time student, therefore receiving no financial aid and not having that semester count towards your 10. The only reason kids really redshirt in baseball is when they're given little to no scholarship money because baseball programs are allowed so few scholarships so they split them up amongst players. Usually the only guys that get full rides in baseball are kids that would have been drafted and therefore good enough to play immediately, hence my rarely redshirting comment. The vast majority of the time those guys are usually pitchers. You pointed out what I was saying though, if Murray was to leave now he has a redshirt which would be used for the year he has to sit out and four seasons he would be eligible for since he didn't burn any at A&M. I have no issue with this plan - at this moment I agree with letting Murray leave - then deal with the consequences of that with recruiting and perhaps players leaving then hope to right the ship next year - if Sumlin can win then we all know that "winning cures all problems" - if he cannot hit the new coach search trail and get the best possible candidate that is available. This is Sumlin's mess he has to deal with it. Mr. Buddy Garrity and Cougar14.2

There are no "full rides" in baseball. The elite pitchers gets 70% max. Some guys get 50% athletic and 50% academic. Depends on the school. It's also a sliding scale. 70% year one, 60% year two, etc..My son's freshman year at UH we paid nothing. His sophomore year, we paid for off campus housing. His last two years at Emporia State (FYTW), we paid for housing and books. Basically, his education was paid for, but not 100% by athletics.2. If you're playing baseball, they are not going to allow you to be a "part time" student. They expect you to play baseball in the summer. Not go to classes. Football is a different animal. They want you on campus in the weight room and have much more scholarship money available. The can play the "part time" game.

Those are the 2 names that keep getting brought up. Also they will go after a graduate transfer like Trevor Knight to get someone in school for spring ball. If Kyler is gone, Hubanek will be the only scholarship QB on the roster for spring practice. His arm might fall off throwing a few thousand passes a day if he's the only QB. It would probably still be a good idea to take Knight for insurance anyway though.

They want you on campus in the weight room and have much more scholarship money available. The can play the "part time" game.Guys like Taylor Jungmann and Mark Appel don't pay anything to go to school. You get the equivalent of so many full scholarships to be divided as the coach sees fit. The sliding scale is because the scholarships are one year renewables, a coach can choose to raise or lower your money based on performance or other factors. Like you said, in lots of cases they cover other expenses with supplementary scholarships or some mysterious grant that shows up. As far as the class thing, we had baseball players at South Dakota State that I also took Summer classes with. When you're a part time student it just means you don't receive any athletic aide and can't participate in games. In baseball you would do this during the fall semester, you would still be able to participate in all the activities but basically have walk-on status. You just see this happen so little in baseball because the kids are re-drafted after their third year and never need the last year of eligibility when these things would come into play.
