Silsbee's McCain injured in post game fight

Recommended Posts

It's my understanding the story was not written until a police report was presented. Writer made several calls to Jasper PD over last few days that were not returned until yesterday.

David knew about incident next day but needed to get official police report and talk with folks before putting it to print.

Yes, I agree it's old news but have no problem with article being printed now.

Not surprised.. I remember in 04 when Kountze played over there a fight broke out in the stands... Luckily the officials got the players off the court before any of them were involved

This fight happened out side when players were loading up on bus.

Also need to mention that no Jasper basketball player was involved.

As a reporter, these are the type of stories that are the hardest to get sometimes. It is still news and good job David for getting it out there because there are a lot of people who probably didn't know this happened — including me until yesterday.

I read the story or what little narrative there is, but it would not make much sense to me for us (as a team) to be loading the bus and an "individual" get into an altercation, alone? If my teammate was getting into it with the opposition, I'd be there ready to beat down anybody and everybody that wanted some. Do teams (players) not load the bus together, anymore?

Ok, that's the procedure then.  That explains it...

They do load together...  I think a large group of people, grownups and kids confronted the Silsbee basketball team and 'jumped' a few of the players...  The question here is where were the adults when this altercation occurred?

Adults usually just go to their cars after the game. They may hang out in the gym until the players walk out but they split up in the parking lot

What a senseless tragedy to occur after a sporting event. Trash talking leading to fisticuffs causing bodily harm is pathetic. Sad but true, the host school shares some burden for safety of fans and players... jmo...Hopefully the injured player has no lasting effects from this altercation and the accused/guilty is handled by the authorities.

Now that I think about it, teams usually bring their own personal security to the games.  BISD routinely bring an officer with them to out of town games.  Could Silsbee not grab a local officer in uniform or a Hardin Co. Sherriff deputy to tag along on these trips?

That's a valid point. The Hardin constable always travels with our teams. The players never leave each other and he never leaves them alone when outside getting on and off the bus. I hate to see this kind of stuff happen.

That makes sense as David would want to get the official report before sending the story to print.

If you are talking about said people from Silsbee, most had left as far as parents and even fans are concerned. The head trainer at least usually doesn't attend out of town games. I was in attendance and was getting in my car with my wife and 2 year old daughter.  I heard the commotion and eased over to see what was going on.  First off you need to be a little familiar about the situation in Jasper right now.  The entrance to the gym was between a building and a set of picnic tables so I would say you had to walk about 40 yards or so to get to the parking lot.  So plenty of time for things to escalate.  The coaches were walking with the team but remember you had probably 35 or so players & student staff thy were escorting out and there is only 3 coaches and maybe 1 or 2 other adults.  There was a large group when I noticed.  I went over and helped lead our players and students to the bus.  Michaels eye looked bad that night.  Didn't say anything about his hand to me.  I did notice one Jasper person get detained.  It was definitely a little alarming to be in the midst of things with people coming out there with their hands in their pockets.  But it was a fairly brief incident that had no business happening.

Yes its a LONG walk to where the busses park in Jasper. And Jasper didnt have any visable security officers in the parking lot. When we played in the Gamble this year in Port Arthur, an officer from Port Arthur walked the team to the bus after our game with Memorial. Just being safe I guess but it was a good move. Better safe than sorry when protecting kids.
