I tinker with carpentry and know that the true craftsmen made stuff like this. I wouldn't know where to start.

Me too. Not only do the gizmos freak me out, i enjoy the detail put into every curve and cut. Cant really tell what type of wood, probably mahogany, but the thing that really gets me is the lack of power tools used. These guys are/were master craftsmen.
