eagleswoodville#1 Posted March 31, 2016 Report Posted March 31, 2016 Multiple students were injured in a bus crash between Kirbyville and Spurger this afternoon. DPS says no injuries appear to be life-threatening, although all students will be transported to hospital in Jasper for observation. Please keep these students and their families and classmates in your prayers. Members of the boys track team, along with two coaches were among the 35 people on the bus. Quote

ST413 Posted April 1, 2016 Report Posted April 1, 2016 Going to be some tough healing going on in the community. I am sure there is lots going to come out of this. After just seeing the WB bus accident 10 year anniversary it makes it hard to want to ever put a child on a bus. Quote

gohornets23 Posted April 1, 2016 Report Posted April 1, 2016 Very sad, sounds like the worst was avoided. Still, surprised this doesn't happen more often, most districts use coaches, not professional bus drivers, to take kids to athletic events. Bus drivers, although much more experienced and qualified, demand hourly pay, coaches are free. It wasn't uncommon for my cousin when he coached that he had to teach all day, then have a practice, then have to drive a team for a bus trip that might be hours away, then work the game, then drive all the way back in the dark after working an 18-20 hour day. But Hey ya know we gotta cut costs, somebody has to pay for the superintendents four secretaries EaglesFootball and ST413 2 Quote
Hupernikomen Posted April 1, 2016 Report Posted April 1, 2016 Those coaches have the appropriate CDL to drive them, and if Woodville is like most small districts anyone with a CDL and passenger endorsement gets plenty of practice driving. They really are designed to keep students inside in case of a rollover. Thankfully, this bus had the smaller window, and not the large windows I have been seeing a lot on school buses these days. Scary to see those windows popped out like that. Must have been quite the impact. Amazingly the buses maintain it's shape pretty well. The Icon 1 Quote
Bigdog Posted April 15, 2016 Report Posted April 15, 2016 The legislature needs to push for all older school buses to be retrofitted with seat belts and fund it (at least partially). They already passed a law requiring all new ones to have them in the wake of the WB bus crash. Quote
