RIP Merle Haggard

Merle Haggard one of the legends of Country Music died today on his 79 birthday.  Spent quiet a few hours and drink quiet a few beers listening to him.

I am picky about my country music. Merle could sing. Chase Each Other and Big City were two of my favorites. I mean, if I am in a country mood, dadgummit, let's play some country. I am not sure what you call some of that stuff they call country today. It sure ain't Merle's sound.

Saw him in an interview quite a few years back.  As you probably know, he wrote most of his songs.   When asked what his favorite was he replied, "Today I Started Loving You Again", it's the best I'll ever write."

So many good songs.  To me, he was the best country singer/songwriter of all time.  Too many favorites to name them all.

Ty, I quoted a line of that song recently to describe the state of our country, "Are we rolling downhill like a snowball headed for hell".   Thought it was appropriate.

Your right.  Maybe a few better singers, or songwriters, but can't think of anyone that did both so well, so many times    

Something a lot of people don't know is that although he sang in the nasel, country style, I once seen a show where he sang a Marty Robins song (who IMO had a Great voice), and Merle duplicated it to perfection.

Yes sir, there's a lot of truth in the that one line and a whole lot of truth in the entire song.

Sing Me Back Home, Workin' Man Blues, Ramblin' Fever, I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink, Okie from Muskogee, Daddy Frank, Misery and Gin, Fightin' Side of Me, Mama Tried, Silver Wings, Are the Good Times Really Over, Big City, Hungry Eyes, If We Make it Through December, Footlights, and That's the Way Love Goes....these are my Favs.
