NATIONAL PAPERCLIP DAY

National Paperclip Day is observed each year on May 29.  Yes, even the paperclip has its own day of honor. It is about that well-known piece of curved wire that keeps our papers together and helps keep us organized.

While there are much earlier claims to the invention of the paperclip, according to the Early Office Museum, the first patent for a “bent wire paper clip” was presented to Samuel B. Fay in the United States in 1867.   The original intention of Fay’s clip was to attach tickets to fabric. However, U.S. patent 64,088 recognized that it could also be used to attach papers together.

There were as many as 50 others that received patents for similar designs prior to 1899. One other notable name receiving a patent for his paperclip design in the United States was Erlman J. Wright in 1877.  At that time, his clip was advertised for use in fastening newspapers.

The Gem paperclip, which was most likely in production in Britain in the early 1870s by The Gem Manufacturing Company, was never patented.  It is the most common type of wire paper clip and is still in use today.  It was introduced to the United States around 1892 and in 1904, Cushman & Denison registered a trademark for the “Gem” name in connection with paper clips.  Paperclips are still sometimes called “Gem clips.”

Today, paperclips come in various sizes, shapes and colors and can make your paperwork look more fun and lively.

MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day, a United States Federal holiday, is observed each year on the last Monday in May.   This day is in honor and remembrance of all men and woman who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day is also a day to remember all loved ones that have passed away.

Traditionally on Memorial Day, the flag of the United States of America is raised briskly to the top of the staff then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position where it remains until noon. At noon, it is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.When the flag is at half-staff, the position is in remembrance of the more than one million men and women who gave their lives for their country.  Raising the flag at noon signifies the nation lives, that the country is resolved not to let their sacrifice be in vain but to rise up in their honor and continue to fight for liberty and justice for all.

 

Memorial Day is known to mark the beginning of summer.

Impersonate Authority Day

June 3rd is Impersonate Authority Day. Apparently, this occasion gives impudence the liberty to express itself in disrespectful role reversal.

Mockers may wreak havoc on organizational structure, toppling hierarchical protocol, on Impersonate Authority Day. Tomorrow, the tide will turn.

On June 3, 2000, country music stars Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw were arrested in Buffalo, New York, for an Impersonate Authority Day prank. Apparently, Chesney took an uninvited ride on a police horse. McGraw blocked officers who tried to intervene and dismount Chesney.

Perhaps coincidentally, on June 3, 1967, Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” hit the number-one spot on the American music charts.

Today is Festival of Popular Delusions Day. While it is not a hugely celebrated or even well-known day, its point can be well taken.

History

The first celebration of this holiday occurred on June 5, 1945 in Germany. It was exactly one year after D-Day, the day Allied forces landed in Normandy. On the day before D-Day, the Germans wrongly believed no invasion would occur due to poor weather conditions.

The first Festival of Popular Delusions Day marked the last day the Nazi’s were able to delude themselves that they would rule the Earth for a thousand years.

Modern day celebration

Nowadays, it is a day to:

> Align our beliefs with facts and reality.
> To perform a reality check on the popular ideas of the day.

In other words, it is a day to work at making right what is wrong. And that includes the myths and misconceptions about cats.

7 common cat myths debunked

Health Myths

Myth: Declawing is like trimming nails

Fact: Declawing is the surgical amputation of the first joint of each toe of the cat. Veterinarians cut the bone right below the first joint. This procedure is seen by many as inhumane and a form of mutilation and is outlawed throughout Europe and many other countries.

Additionally, many cats who have been declawed develop behavioral and litter box issues later in life because the ends of their toes become extremely sensitive.

Myth: You should give your cat cow's milk

Fact: Although your cat may appear to like milk, it isn’t good for them. Cow's milk offers no nutritional value to your cat and they have trouble digesting the milk since most cats are lactose intolerant. Because their systems cannot digest milk properly, drinking milk can cause diarrhea in cats.

Myth: Cats always land on their feet

Fact: Many times, but not always. Cats can and do sustain serious limb, head, jaw and thoracic injuries when falling from high places. These injuries can result in death.

Cats have what is called a cat righting reflex where they have an innate ability to orient themselves as they fall in an attempt to land on their feet. They can twist themselves around because they have an unusually flexible spine and no collarbone.

Given enough distance, once they orient themselves they spread out like a parachute giving them extra help to land on their feet.

Since we hear stories of miraculous survival of cats falling from high places, we presume this means they always land on heir feet.

Myth: Pregnant women must give up their cats

Fact: This myth is born from the fact that some (not all) cats can be carriers of toxoplasmosis, a zoonotic disease that can cause birth defects in the baby if contracted by the mother during pregnancy.

If a cat is a carrier, a person can be exposed to toxoplasmosis through a cat’s feces. However, a woman is more likely to catch it from handling raw or undercooked meat or digging in the garden than from her cat.

Cat owners can protect themselves from cat-related exposure by emptying the litter box daily, having someone else clean the litter box or wearing rubber gloves while cleaning the litter box.

Myth: Female cats should be allowed to have one litter before they’re spayed

Fact: Cats that are spayed before having any litters are less inclined to develop mammary tumors, which are particularly deadly in cats. Allowing one litter contributes to the overpopulation problem that leads to many cats being killed in shelters each year and provides no medical or psychological benefits for the cat.

Personality Myths

Myth: Cats are loners

Fact: Cats are extremely social animals with each other and if living with humans with their cat caregiver.

Cats will form a strong bond with their humans and become very attached to them. The degree to which they demand attention in the form of petting sessions, lap time and play time will vary depending on the personality of the cat. Cats will come to recognize the sound of your car, and your step at the door and meet and greet you when you come home. And many a cat will sleep in bed next to or on top of their human companions!

Even free roaming, un-owned cats will choose to live in a cat community where they lie together, groom each other and play together rather then living on their own.

Myth: Cats are unhappy kept indoors

Fact: Cats are purrfectly content living safely indoors as long as they are provided with plenty of toys, scratching posts, window perches for looking outside, and climbing towers for exercise.

Indoor only cats live 2-3 times longer than indoor/outdoor cats who are exposed to many dangers.

If you do want to give your cat some outdoor time, make sure it is supervised outdoor time, by using a pet stroller or training your cat to walk with a harness and leash.

Drive In Movie Day:

Park-In Theaters–the term “drive-in” came to be widely used only later–was the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead, a movie fan and a sales manager at his father’s company, Whiz Auto Products, in Camden. Reportedly inspired by his mother’s struggle to sit comfortably in traditional movie theater seats, Hollingshead came up with the idea of an open-air theater where patrons watched movies in the comfort of their own automobiles. He then experimented in the driveway of his own house with different projection and sound techniques, mounting a 1928 Kodak projector on the hood of his car, pinning a screen to some trees, and placing a radio behind the screen for sound. He also tested ways to guard against rain and other inclement weather, and devised the ideal spacing arrangement for a number of cars so that all would have a view of the screen.

The young entrepreneur received a patent for the concept in May of 1933 and opened Park-In Theaters, Inc. less than a month later, with an initial investment of $30,000. Advertising it as entertainment for the whole family, Hollingshead charged 25 cents per car and 25 cents per person, with no group paying more than one dollar. The idea caught on, and after Hollingshead’s patent was overturned in 1949, drive-in theaters began popping up all over the country. One of the largest was the All-Weather Drive-In of Copiague, New York, which featured parking space for 2,500 cars, a kid’s playground and a full service restaurant, all on a 28-acre lot.

Drive-in theaters showed mostly B-movies–that is, not Hollywood’s finest fare–but some theaters featured the same movies that played in regular theaters. The initially poor sound quality–Hollingshead had mounted three speakers manufactured by RCA Victor near the screen–improved, and later technology made it possible for each car’s to play the movie’s soundtrack through its FM radio. The popularity of the drive-in spiked after World War II and reached its heyday in the late 1950s to mid-60s, with some 5,000 theaters across the country. Drive-ins became an icon of American culture, and a typical weekend destination not just for parents and children but also for teenage couples seeking some privacy. Since then, however, the rising price of real estate, especially in suburban areas, combined with the growing numbers of walk-in theaters and the rise of video rentals to curb the growth of the drive-in industry. Today, fewer than 500 drive-in theaters survive in the United States.

I wanted to give you a heads up about Upsy Daisy Day, celebrated tomorrow, June 8,  so that you may make whatever preparations necessary to greet this day with a smile.

Upsy Daisy Day, according to Chase's Calendar of Events, "is a day to remind people to get up gloriously, gratefully, and gleefully each morning."

You often hear someone say to a child "Upsy daisy" when they are lifting them up off the ground or onto something. Think of Upsy Daisy Day as a day to forget your troubles, lift yourself up, and be cheerful about all that life has to offer.

June 10th is National Black Cow Day

You may know it as a black cow, or maybe you're more familiar with the less whimsical, more descriptive term "root beer float." But this delicious drink is nothing if not flexible. "Ice cream soda" also describes it. In some parts of the country, black cows are called "brown cows" when chocolate ice cream is added. Purple cows substitute grape soda pop for the root beer.

And it's all good. It even has its own quasi-holiday, National Black Cow Day. So make a beeline for your local drive-in or drive-through and tell 'em "I'll have a black cow." And they'll go "What?"
