This has been going on. If a guy with a knife charges a cop, some are advocating that we talk softly to the attacker and show him the folly of his ways...... instead of shouting, "DROP THE KNIFE!!". 

As an old police saying goes about many issues police officers face, "I cannot solve in five minutes what it took you years to create".
