mustang mom Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 I can't remember all of the specifics, but I believe that Hamshire-Fannett girls got first and the West Brook boys got first. The WO-S 4x1 and 4x2 relay teams won big, but came in 5th in the mile relay. WO-S' Franks got first in triple jump and third in long jump (or vice versa.) WO-S' Vanquanisha Jordan got first in long jump and third in triple (or vice versa.) WO-S' Adrian Mims took first in the shot put. LC-M's Bean got first in the 800m, a race I heard he doesn't normally run. That's kind of a run down of what went on. It should be in the Orange Leader tomorrow.
KFDM COOP Posted February 25, 2007 Author Report Posted February 25, 2007 WO-S relay unit rolls at Mustang RelaysVan WadeThe Orange LeaderORANGEFIELD — Speed was certainly there for the West Orange-Stark 400 and 800-meter relay teams Saturday at the Mustang Relays held at Orangefield High school while Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Drew Bean tried something he hasn’t done it awhile.Dominique Rhodes, Josh Gloston, Jacoby Franks and Earl Thomas zipped around the Bobcat track in tremendous fashion as the foursome claimed both the 400-meter relay and the 800-meter relay. They won the 400-relay in a swift time of 42.90 and the 800-relay in 1:32.10, despite batting windy conditions. Not bad for a group of guys that had their first practice together Saturday.“The 42.90 in the 400 was pretty impressive,†said WO-S head track coach Toby Foreman. “That’s not too bad for your first race of the season and you haven’t even had a full practice together yet. The 800 time, I know we can get faster than that. It’s going to take some time to get used to making a smooth transitions with handoffs and all but I know these guys can do it.â€Gloston, the unsung young man of the group, went on to win the 200 meters as well, running a 23.46 against the win.“Josh is a tremendous kid,†Foreman said. “He’s the first guy out to practice every day and he loves the track. He’s such a small kid but he’s super strong for his size.â€Bean, a senior, is fresh off a Class 4A state cross country championship. Instead of running his usual 3,200 and 1,600meters, he opted to run just the 800 meters Saturday and won with a time of 2:03.“I wanted to mix things up a little bit today and I haven’t competed in the 800 in a couple years so this was a fun experience,†Bean said. “This was probably the only chance I was going to get to run this race. I’ll be back running the 1,600 and 3,2000 and concentrating on making the Texas Relays. I’m still running about 85 to 90 miles a week and I’m looking to stay healthy in trying to get back to state.â€Bean earned a bronze in the 1,600 meters at state in Class 4A last year.â€Bridge City’s Cody Mills captured the 100 meters for the second straight week. The Cardinal junior won the 100 at the Nederland Bulldog Relays last week in 11.78 but clocked in with a winning time of 11.40 Saturday.“Cody just continues to step it up each and every week,†said Cardinal head coach James Johnson. “He puts a lot of energy and heart into what he’s trying to accomplish. He’ll just continue improving.â€The Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns captured the girls division with 172 1/2 points while Nederland was second with 147 and the Bridge City Lady Cardinals were third with 94 1/2 in an eight-team field.On the boys’ side, Beaumont West Brook claimed first place with 134 points while Nederland was second with 90 and WO-S third with 85 in an 11-team field.Orange County had a “field day†in the field events in the boys division.WO-S had two first-place finishes with Adrian Mims in the shot put (46-3 3/4) and Franks in the triple jump (42-8). Vidor had two first-place finishers in Jared Williamson in the high jump (6-2) and Jared Parker in the pole vault (13-6) while LC-M’s David Sicktich nabbed first place in the discus (131-1).On the girls’ side, Bridge City nabbed two first-place spots with Erica Garza in the 3,200 meters (13:14.37) and Brittany James in the 100 meters (13.90). WO-S’ Vanquenesha Jordan won the long jump (16-6) and Orangefield’s Jessica Maas claimed the high jump (5-0).

Bean is beast on the track!
