real play, what is the right call

This happened in a JV game outside of Amarillo.  The punter gets a high snap.  He turns to kick the ball and the up back is blocked backwards so when the punter punts, he kicks it right into the up back, his own man.  The ball goes up, the punter catches it and advances the ball for a first down.  Ball never touches an opposing player.  Can the ball be advanced??

Yes because the ball never crossed the line of scrimmage to qualify it as a punt.

Is a forward punt the same as a forward pass? Trying to process the play but I would think the ball should be dead where the ball was touched first, wherever the up back was hit.

Should be a blocked punt, receiving team recovers where it is touched.

No scrimmage kicks and passes treated differently. If the ball were to get partially blocked but have enough to go past the Scrimmage line and bounce backwards and hit somebody behind the line then it could spotted there. It has to clear the line of scrimmage to qualify.

A punt that never reaches the line of scrimmage CAN be advanced by the punting team.  I've seen it happen a couple of times.  By the way, BOTH of those times that I can remember resulted in TDs against us.

I imagine the same rules to apply to punts as field goals and xps. The kicking team can recover a blocked fg or xp and advance it for a 2pt conversion, first down or a touchdown as long as it doesn't cross the line of scrimmage. Pretty general rule that would also cover forward passes in the direction of eligible receivers as long as the ball doesn't touch the ground.

I honestly didn't know the answer and assumed we would have some officials on the forum.  What confused me most was the ball was blocked by the offensive player.  When the punter punted, he punted right into the backside of one of his blockers.  Ball goes straight up, punter catches and runs for the first down.

In this scenario, could the ball have been thrown legally?

Yes it could be thrown, repunted, ran. They key is - you have no kick until it passes the LOS. Callaway7 is very smart!

As somebody who has officiated in multiple chapters there's good officials and bad officials in every chapter. Lumberton bashed some Houston guys from last week pretty well. Difference is lot of chapters have more guys enter the chapter to choose from. Feel free to join we could use more guys wanting to put the best product they can on the field.
