KFDM COOP
Panthers fend off Bobcats, 4-3Gabe PruettThe Orange LeaderORANGEFIELD — It took a questionable call on the last play of the game for the 4A Beaumont Ozen Panthers down the 3A Orangefield Bobcats.Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning and Zach Peevey on third, Brett Ramsey hit a shot to third.Never one not to hustle, Ramsey scooted down the line as Ozen third baseman Wrayn Taylor bobbled the ball.Taylor threw but Ramsey seemed to beat it out but the umpire, who was positioned in between shortstop and third called the senior out.The 4-3 loss spoiled an excellent pitching performance by a duo of freshman Orangefield pitchers.Jace Statum came in to pitch in the third inning and went four innings for the Bobcats (2-2) giving up just one hit on three walks to go with eight strike outs.Statum absorbed the loss as Ozen scored the winning run in the top of the seventh.Ozen’s Chris Roggett scored when Albert Lott grounded out to short.Roggett reached base on a walk and moved all the way to third when Josh Gardiner laid down a sacrifice bunt.Orangefield fans were also not pleased with the umpire’s call when Roggett slid in to third base.“Take the calls out of it and they (Ozen) just made the big plays when they had to,†Orangefield Coach Jeff Bennett said. “We had bases loaded at one point with no outs and could have blown it wide open. The only place you don’t want to hit the ball in that position is to the pitcher and that is what we had happen.â€Orangefield loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with the game knotted at three.Ramsey and Todd Glaze each reached base on errors and Ben Ludwig then was hit by a pitch.Possum LaFleur then hit a ball right back to the pitcher which starter a 1-2-3 double-play.Corey Sheppard then drew a walk before Statum hit the final out to second.Ozen struck first in the top of the second when Taylor scored after an Orangefield error. Taylor reached first on a single to left.Danny Fowler, who had walked earlier, then scored as Roggett drew a bases-loaded walk off Orangefield starter Jacob Felts.Felts went two innings giving up two runs, one hit and three walks with one strike out.Orangefield took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Peevey led things off with a single.Clint Worthy then reached on an error and Peevey was able to move to third. Both runners then scored when Ramsey reached on an error and then he moved to third on a wild pitch.Ludwig then brought Ramsey home with a RBI single to right.Ozen scored the tying run in the top of the sixth inning as Deston James led off by reaching on an error. He then was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt and scored from second on a RBI single to left by Taylor.“I am overjoyed with the way we are pitching right now,†Bennett said. “Statum and Felts are doing a great job at the top of the rotation and hopefully Zach will keep coming along.â€Peevey hurled one inning giving up one run on no hits with one walk and no strike outs. The Bobcats return to action Thursday during the Orangefield Baseball Tournament. Orangefield will face Beaumont Central at 8 p.m. Thursday with action starting up at 10 a.m. when Warren takes on the Vidor JV
