KFDM COOP Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 Nederland boys 1, Little Cypress-Mauriceville 0 LITTLE CYPRESS -- No moment can have been more special all season for sophomore defender Ryan Washburn, whose goal lifted Nederland to a 1-0 overtime win past determined Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Tuesday night at Bear Stadium. A sweeper with defensive responsibilities, Washburn moved into the attacking area with about two minutes left in the second of two 10-minute overtime periods. He barely won a close pursuit with LC-M's goalkeeper for a free ball in front of the Bears' goal. The outside of Washburn's right foot found the perfect angle into the left side of the goal as Nederland may have saved its season. The Bulldogs improved to 8-7-1 and 8-3-1 and received strong performances from center midfielder Austin Wyble and fullback Taylor Rush. But Nederland did not appear to have a cinch scoring threat when Logan Soares passed the ball down the line to Rico Keeling. The odds improved after Keeling fired a shot into the middle of the attacking area. That's when Washburn made the game-winning play. "It was a beautiful game," NHS coach Rob Bledsoe said. "Their goalkeeper and their defense (LC-M's) made some outstanding plays. They jumped on our every scoring chance." The road may be even tougher this Friday when Nederland shall travel to Lumberton at 7 p.m.
12 Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 1-0 is a tough loss; I think that was the final of the girls' game, too.
