Cardinals Win Fog Shortened Ballgame 6-1 in Five Innings

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University baseball team put six runs on the board, and held visiting LeMoyne College to just one run before fog engulfed Vincent Beck Stadium and ended Tuesday night’s series opener after five innings.

The game was called after five innings as thick fog made visibility unsafe for play. Game two of the series, originally schedules for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, has been moved up to 5 p.m. due to the threat of heavy fog again tomorrow night.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, as Erik Kanaby, Michael Ambort and Dan Hernandez picked up singles to get LU on the board. Kanaby led off the inning with a single up the middle and scored on a passed ball giving LU the early 1-0 lead. Ambort pushed the second run across with a single to center field, which knocked in Collin DeLome. Ambort then scored the third run of the inning for LU, trotting home on a sacrifice fly by Brian Lloyd.

The Dolphins put their only run of the game on the board in the top of the fourth inning by stringing together a pair of hits. After a one out single by Phil St. Amant, Robby Perez ripped a two out double down the right filed line. St. Amant scored from second, but the LeMoyne rally was quickly stopped as Cardinal Pitcher Brian Needham struck out Michael Gedman.

The Cardinals answered the Dolphin run with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, as Lloyd scored off a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Baker. On the bunt, Leduc attempted to throw Lloyd out at third, but threw the ball into left field, giving Lloyd an easy trip home for the run.

Lamar added to their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of more Dolphin mistakes. DeLome led off with a single to center and stole second base and advanced to third on an error by St. Amant, whose throw from behind the plate sailed into center field.

Ambort then walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch, with DeLome scoring the Cards fifth run of the game. The final run of the game was scored when Ambort crossed the plate on a David Moore double to center field.

Lamar received a solid pitching performance from Needham, who gave up one run and four hits in five innings of work, while striking out five Dolphin batters. Offensively the Cards pounded out seven hits, with DeLome and Ambort each collecting two hits on the night.

Shouldn't they postpone and resume this afternoon?  When I left Lemoyne was batting in the 6th with the bases loaded, and I think no outs.  Colin Delome and misjudged a flyball that allowed a run to score.  Sounds like Lemoyne got hosed.

Not really. In non-conference games they'll just call it a game in move on.

Maybe that what I was thinking.  I know some games have been called after 5, but I guess it is conference game that are usually "resumed"
