Bigdog Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 3 hours ago, Honest Abe said: I don't believe that It's not as 'off topic' as you claim. I read numerous posts in this thread stating that it would be good for coach E to 'get a bump' (in pay) as he 'deserves' if Monte gets both titles. I think the remarks were to the effect of him having a master's degree. Not sure how much (if any) he receives for that accomplishment, but a reason to obtain such a degree (in education) is in hopes of an administrative type job. The AD is a type of admin job, especially based on the pay scale. A reliable source tells me he's not receiving $7.5k/year as a stipend. That same source also confirmed that he IS the lowest paid coach in 22-5A for certain. I'm being vocal about this bc I want coach E to stick around a bit longer for my youngest boy. I want him to have the same opportunities as did my oldest son. I'm not against him getting a raise, don't misunderstand. Maybe he gets the lowest stipend but as I am trying to get team first to understand that is only part of the equation, it doesn't feed the bulldog so to speak.
Ned Nederlander Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 Nederland's head coaching stipends are a fairly low in comparison to other districts. They have been like that for a while.
Proud Dawg Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 I think that 2nd sport head coaches receive 3100 for those sports not including football.
Stattrax Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 I think Nederland ISD made the hire knowing several things. If Nederland ISD planned on paying big money on a coach and upgrading facilities over the next few years, they would have gone outside. But in the name of continuity, and the fact upgrades might night be in the plans, it was really a simple choice. Congrats to Monte. IMO he deserved a shot. And as I stated from the beginning, under the circumstances, he was the best choice. bulldog81 and KF89 2

Lol. i like how you changed it to only the stipend when I gave you the numbers to prove you wrong, especially when you said nothing about it until it was your only argument. You really think any coach is depending on thier stipend to feed their families? I'm sure they are glad to have it but that's not what pays the bills. I never changed, I have been talking basketball pay the whole time. This is under sports isn't it??? coaching class 101
KF89 Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 you guys should start a "English salary thread" outanup, Proud Dawg, 3n2 and 1 other 4
Reagan Posted March 17, 2017 Report Posted March 17, 2017 Just curious: How many times did Derouen and August beat PN-G?
Brubaker Posted March 17, 2017 Report Posted March 17, 2017 Ironically, local good ol boy went 3-2-1, snapping the "streak". Outside hire big Splash Bobby went 0'fer...
Reagan Posted March 18, 2017 Report Posted March 18, 2017 Over 6 years, home cooking Derouen went 19-36-3. Never won more than 4 games during this time. Why is this apropos? Along with being home cooking, people at the time thought since Derouen coached with Ronnie Thompson that he would/could do the same at Nederland that Thompson had done. Heck, he even ran the same offense that Thompson ran. Well, didn't turn out so good. Point? Are we looking at the future? All we got is hope. Because, just like Derouen, there wasn't any evidence that he could do what Thompson did. We are in the same situation. Only time will tell. PS -- didn't someone here say the Superintendent wasn't really interested in sports? If so, this might answer a lot of questions. More on this later.
Reagan Posted March 18, 2017 Report Posted March 18, 2017 Did Neauman resign/retire because their wasn't actual support for sports from the Superintendent?
Knoddy1 Posted March 19, 2017 Report Posted March 19, 2017 There was no evidence Steve could do what Ronnie Thompson did at TJ, but Thompson was not able to recreate what he did at TJ again either. There was also no evidence Larry Neumann could do what he did, but Steve Derouen was the offensive coordinator under Neumann for a number of years and he did great, but some think that home cooking is like poison, some need to get off the negativity and give the new coach a chance, heck we have not even had our secret spring game yet.

True. And it ended up proving that he couldn't. You are right, there are no guarantees. But, you don't shoot yourself in the foot right before you run the 100 yard dash and think you are going to win it. Derouen did GREAT under Neauman? Debatable. Anyway, I'm trying to make a correlation here that history might repeat itself. Home cooking rather than other things considered may not work out.
Knoddy1 Posted March 19, 2017 Report Posted March 19, 2017 Lloyd Wasserman, Bobby August were not home town boys and they stunk the place up pretty good. All I'm saying is picking a new coach is not an exact science, and you sure can't get any guarantees that it'll be good. When we hired Lloyd Wasserman he only had a couple of winning seasons, and those couple of seasons had Roosevelt Leaks in the backfield for him, heck one of the walking dead could coach a winning season with him on their team. LOL.

outanup Posted March 20, 2017 Report Posted March 20, 2017 DeRouen was an excellent OC but not so much a HC. The talent level at TJ in the late 70s and early 80s was on a different level than anything DeRouen had in his reign at Ned. Then you add the fact that nobody had seen anything like the TJ offense at the HS level, much less the athletes and that's pretty tough to defend. Lots of factors in the formula for success. One is time, lets get behind Monte and give him some......Im all in. Brubaker and bulldog81 2

Through his 6 years he never had the talent once?! But, again, good coaches find a way.

Smitty, you sure read a lot into what isn't said and what isnt there. You look to make your own reality and feed your own narrative. Outanup gave an honest evaluation and said nothing against our kids, but you hear ONLY what feeds your opinion. Got a question for you... how long had it been since Nederland had 1, beaten PNG, and 2, made the playoffs before Derouen got there? Derouen couldn't get Nederland over the hump, but he started it in the right direction before Bobby derailed it and set the stage for the best hire Nederland will have ever made. outanup 1

outanup Posted March 20, 2017 Report Posted March 20, 2017 Gotta agree, someone sure sounds like Smitty!!!!!!!

First, we don't know who all applied. OR -- who may have expressed an interest but didn't officially apply. But, my point was did we explore all possibilities? Did we try and make contacts around the state? I said originally: Don't rush. Go out and find the best available. At this point, I'm not sure this was done. I'm still concerned about what was stated about the Superintendent not caring about sports. If this is the case, then, no, an exhausted search was not done.
