Great Post!  That stuff is interesting.  I understand the saying, "The whole nine yards", came from the gunners on WW-II bombers over Europe were given 27 feet of belted ammunition.  When they come back in, they'd say they shot the whole nine yards.

Saw a documentary on how the military Tank got its name.  When the British were first developing them, they'd transport on rail cars and cover with a tarp.   Since it was a top secret project, when folks would ask what it was, they would say it was a tank (vessel).
