KFDM COOP Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 Kountze nets third crown in 4 seasonsAUSTIN - The Kountze Lions used a 17-4 run in the final 4:33 to defeat Shallowater 71-57 in the Class 2A state basketball title game Saturday at the Erwin Center.The Lions (32-6) claimed their third state title in four seasons and fourth in school history. The Lions won the 2A title in 2005 and 1970 and the 3A crown in 2004.Senior guard Cameron Powell scored 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting. He scored 16 of his points in the second half. Senior center Clayton Busby contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds, and freshman post Devin Bray added 12 points and six rebounds.Wes Dipprey led Shallowater (30-4) with 21 points.• Nazareth 52, Laneville 43 — Dustin Schulte scored 16 points, including 10 in a row in a key stretch of the second half, to send defending Class A Division II champion Nazareth to its fifth state championship. Nazareth (19-6) matched the school's girls state title from a week earlier.• Thorndale 39, Martin's Mill 37 — Austin Falke's steal at midcourt and layup with 14 seconds left sealed the Class A Division I title for Thorndale (28-2). With Thorndale up 37-35, Falke stuck out his left hand to tip away Travis Womble's pass for Cody Mewbourn and outran two defenders to roll in the layup.
