I'm going to my first pro football game since 1995 in the astrodome.

You'll have a good time at NRG. Great tailgating atmosphere, and what should be a pretty good football game as well. I recommend going on an empty stomach and finding the food truck of your choice to eat at before the game located between the blue suite parking lot and the stadium. They have quite a few awesome food trucks lined up out there before games.

The tailgate that I go to when I go to games is good natured towards opposing teams fans as are most I've seen. There are idiots in every fan base but there are a lot of friendly people out there as well.
