Lady Bulldogs clinch 20-4A district crown

The Port Arthur News

NEDERLAND -- After thinking about it, the idea seemed a fairly pleasant one late Monday night for Nederland girls soccer coach Julie Johnson.

The idea finally sinked in Johnson's mind that her 2007 Lady Bulldogs had clinched at least a share of their 14th district championship in Julie's 16 head-coaching seasons.

"That sounds pretty good, now that I think of it," Johnson said.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 19-1 and 15-0 with one remaining regular-season game as they claimed both ends of a day-night doubleheader on Monday.

Nederland defeated Vidor 8-0 in Bulldog Stadium early Monday afternoon. Later in the same afternoon, the Lady Dogs visited Sour Lake and returned home Monday night with a 9-1 win at Hardin-Jefferson.

That's a long day of soccer for Johnson's girls, yet a very rewarding one. After all, the Nederlanders have a full week before they have another game. They host Port Neches-Groves in Bulldog Stadium next Tuesday night on Senior Night at 5:30 p.m.

"I felt we had a pretty well-controlled game against Vidor," Johnson said. "It was a long day, sitting around and waiting for lightning to stop. Then we played a little air ball in the Hardin-Jefferson game. We won some balls out of the air. I would prefer us playing on the ground."

The suffocating Lady Bulldogs' defense limited the workload for goalkeeper Heather Hussey who sustained only one shot on her goal in each game. Meanwhile, Nederland stormed to a 5-0 halftime lead against Vidor (outshooting the Lady Pirates 19-1) and a 4-0 halftime advantage at H-J (leading in shots 25-1).

Johnna Wagner, Megan Melancon, and Taylor Carlson scored two goals apiece while Lauren Matt and Stephanie Karam added one each in the Vidor game. Johnson credited assists against Vidor to Wagner, Carlson, Taylor Havard and freshman Jacie Bell. The start of the Vidor outing was delayed by rain.

Lauren Matt, Logan Matt and Taylor Havard had two goals apiece at H-J while Heather Crawford, Ashley Bombek and Taren Dupuis added one each. Carlson led the assists column in Sour Lake with two followed by Havard and Karam with one apiece.
