League openers big for PN-G, Dogs

A couple of baseball teams with .500 pre-district records, Port Neches-Groves and Nederland should have their hands full in tonight's District 22-4A baseball openers.

PN-G's Indians, 7-7, host Beaumont Ozen tonight at 7 p.m., while Nederland, 5-5, travels to play Vidor.

Coach Kyle Green's fourth Vidor team is off to an 11-2 start highlighted by a 4-0 performance at last weekend's Jasper tournament. The Pirates handed Jasper its first loss of the season after 10 wins and they did it with three players out injured.

Nederland went 1-3 in round robin action at last week's Deer Park tournament, with a win over Sharpstown the biggest positive to go with losses to Cy-Falls, La Porte and Clear Creek.

PN-G went 2-2-1 at the Lufkin tournament, scoring wins over Lufkin and Lufkin Hudson while losing to Spring Branch Memorial and Houston Westside, with a tie with Tyler Lee.

Ozen brings a 7-6 record to PN-G. The Panthers, too, have had an up-and-down start against a tough schedule. They opened the regular season with a 7-3 win over District 21-5A favorite West Brook and went 2-1 last week in the Bridge City tournament, losing only to the host Cardinals.

District 21-5A begins tonight as well and Port Arthur Memorial also faces a tough team in Channelview, opening league play on the road. The Falcons went to state last year in Class 4A, but are rebuilding with only one starter back. According to the Houston Chronicle, Channelview is 0-4 against 5A competition this year.

The Titans, 6-5, have not played a 5A opponent this year, but are 3-2 against 4A competition.

West Brook plays at Atascocita, Kingwood hosts Baytown Lee and Humble is at Baytown Sterling in other 21-5A games.

In 21-3A, Bridge City is at Orangefield, Hamshire-Fannett at Jasper and West Orange-Stark at Silsbee. East Chambers hosts Anahuac in 24-2A play.
