Fort Bend Marshall v Hutto

What an entertaining game. Momentum was the factor. After FBM scored in the opening minute of the game, Hutto hammered away and took control of the first half. 21-7 at the break. After holding FBM on their first possession, Hutto had the opportunity to march down, eat the clock, and take a commanding 28-7 lead.

Many times a game's momentum will swing on a "big play". A pick six, a fumble recovery, or a TD return off of a punt, or something like that. In this game a seemingly small play made the difference. Midway in the third, Hutto faced a 3 and long, maybe needing 7 yards, from their own 25. The QB looked to pass but could not find an open receiver, so he ran around the right side into open space. Inexplicably, he executed a hook slide two full yards short of the marker without a defender about to be on him. He could have made another 4-5 yards easy if he would have kept upright. After the punt, FBM began to roll, and the shootout began.

I thought when this happened that seemingly innocuous decision might come back to haunt Hutto, and I was right. Hutto seemed unconcerned and complacent about the 3rd down failure. The team and staff seemed to just shrug it off. That ultimately was a mistake.
