I attended this game because I wanted to see this Newton team. Glad I did.

Starters for each team:

Woodville: #5 Martin, #12 C. Williams, #14 Brooks, #15 Beatty, #23 Adams

Newton: #5 Josh Foster, #10 Noah Williams, #20 Tamauzia Brown, #23 Corbin Foster, #24 J. Sylvester

Woodville came out shooting the three ball very well, led by their best player Christian Williams. He knocked down 3 early three's in first Q. Newton could not buy a three as Brown was 0-5 in first quarter and a half. Newton did get a lot of 2nd chance points from crashing the boards and just out hustling Woodville for loose balls. 2nd quarter Newton was able to get some turnovers and fast break points to get the halftime lead.

3rd quarter was the difference in the game. Newton extended their defense out to shut down the 3 point line and dominated the glass, not giving Woodville any chance of offensive rebounds. Brown finally hit a couple of three's which helped open the offense up. Newton's stellar defense also led to their transition offense, getting more fast break opportunities. The 4th Q was basically the same. Newton cruised to this solid district win.

Woodville's Christian Williams was the best pure basketball player on the floor and the best shooter as well. #5 Martin played well. He plays much bigger than his '5"10 body.

Newton's Josh Foster was their leader last night. He really played well and controlled things from his PG position. Brown definitely had an off night shooting, going just 2-10 from 3 land. Corbin Foster is another who plays much bigger than his size. He was surprisingly good offensively. Not what you might expect from an all state middle linebacker. The big man Sylvester is a game changer for Newton. He controlled the paint all night, getting 7 block shots with 13 rebounds. The sophomore's ability to defend the rim gives the rest of his teammates chances to be aggressive and gamble on defense and create turnovers. Newton's overall length caused havoc last night.

If the shooting improves for Newton, their length and overall athletic ability on defense will make them a very, very dangerous team in the playoffs. Also the combination of Head Coach Jeff Parks and Assistant Marcus Carver make this team so much better. They will be a tough out.

Newton will be shooting up my rankings.
