Sam Houston wins two of three in Central Arkansas series

GAME THREE - Sam Houston 15, Central Arkansas 6

NCAA BOX SCORE, PLAY-BY-PLAY

CONWAY, Ark.-- Junior designated hitter Bobby Verbick had five hits and eight RBIs in leading the Sam Houston State Bearkats to a 15-6 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears in their Southland Conference series finale.

Verbick, who hit for the cycle Sunday and also had two home runs on Saturday, had four RBI in the first two innings as the Bearkats (15-8, 2-1) went up 5-0 after two innings. He had a two-run triple in the first and added a two-run double in the second. A two-run single in the fourth gave Verbick six RBI and keyed a six-run inning that gave SHSU an 11-0 lead.

For the three-game series, Verbick went 7-for-11 for a .636 batting average and 12 runs batted in.

The Bears, who managed only one hit through the first five innings, put up six runs in the sixth. Matt Warren doubled down the right-field line for the first run and Derrick Corso followed with a similar shot to the same spot for another. Payton Seelinger’s sacrifice fly to right brought in the third run and an infield single by Jonathan Ashworth scored the fourth.

Tye Throneberry went the opposite way for an RBI single and a run-scoring single to left-center by Kevin Rawls closed the gap to 11-6. However, the Bears left the bases loaded in that inning and again in the seventh and eighth innings. For the game, UCA stranded 12 runners.

Corso went 3 for 5 for the Bears, while Rawls, Warren, Ashworth and Craig Nyborg all had two hits. Rightfielder Todd Sebek was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI for the Bearkats.

SHSU starter Tim Gray (2-1) went 5.2 innings and got the win. Gray struck out three, walked two, and gave up seven hits. Grant Gatlin (0-1) got the loss for the Bears.

Sam Houston State plays host to Prairie View A&M Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium in a makeup of last Tuesday's rainout.

GAME TWO - Sam Houston 8, Central Arkansas 5

NCAA BOX SCORE, PLAY-BY-PLAY

CONWAY, Ark.-- The Sam Houston State Bearkats got a pair of home runs from Bobby Verbick among their 13 hits and downed the University of Central Arkansas Bears 8-5 in Southland Conference play Saturday.

The loss was the first of the season at home for the Bears (9-8,1-1). SHSU improved to 14-8 and 1-1.

Verbick, a junior designated hitter, hit a two-run shot to right in the fifth and added another two-run homer to left in the seventh inning.He finished 2 for 3 with four RBI.

SHSU starter Jacob Howard (4-2) went seven innings for the victory and left with a 7-4 lead. Jason Prihoda relieved him in the eighth after the first two UCA batters reached. He allowed an RBI single to Graham Martin but got out of the inning, stranding two.

After the Bearkats added another insurance run in the top of the ninth, Prihoda struck out the side, all looking, in the bottom of the inning to close it out for his seventh save.

For UCA, senior Matt Warren led off the fourth inning with a home run, his fourth of the season. He added another RBI on a groundout in the next inning. Kevin Rawls and Graham Martin both had two hits and an RBI apiece for UCA, which managed only eight hits for the game.

The teams complete the series with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.

GAME ONE - Central Arkansas 6, Sam Houston 5

NCAA BOX SCORE, PLAY-BY-PLAY

CONWAY, Ark. _ Senior Matt Warren doubled to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Kevin Rawls with the game-winning run in a 6-5 victory over Sam Houston State on Friday at UCA Field.

The Bears (9-7, 1-0) won their first-ever Southland Conference game behind a 13-hit offensive attack and a 10-strikeout performance from junior Matt Whitaker.

Whitaker (2-2) and Bobby Pritchett held the Bearkats to five hits. Jeremy Holzbach led Sam Houston State the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Five different Bears had at least two hits, with Warren contributing a game-high three RBI. Whitaker (2-2) went eight innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs.

The Bears fell behind 4-0 after the Bearkats (13-8, 0-1) put up three runs in the fourth inning.

Rightfielder Todd Sebek started the scoring for SHSU, singling up the middle, stealing second, then scoring on a single by Holzbach in the first inning. Karl Krailo singled in Keith Stein who got on base on an error; Bobby Verbick was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error; and Heath Puth's hit a sacrific fly to right field to score Krailo in the Kats' three-run fourth.

UCA answered with a four-run fifth inning, sending eight batters to the plate. All four of the runs were unearned off starter Jesse Marshall because of a pair of errors. Warren had a two-run single to left and right fielder Derrick Corso doubled home two more.

Sam Houston went back ahead 5-4 in the top of the sixth as another Holzbach single scored Austin Boggs who walked.

but UCA tied it in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by pinch-hitter Grant Gatlin.

The Bearkats brought in reliever Luke Prihoda to start the eighth but Rawls greeted him with a leadoff single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt by Gatlin moved him to second. One out later, Warren laced a double to left for the game-winner.

Pritchett came on to pitch the ninth, faced four batters and earned his first save. Warren, Dickson, Payton Seelinger, Jonathan Ashworth and Rawls all had two hits for the Bears. SHSU shortstop Jeremy Holzbach was the only Bearkat with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 4.

Game 2 of the series will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
