If this is true, can't they hit the kid with a sex crime? That's peeping right? Being a registered sex offender for the rest of your life because you were immature in high school definitely isn't worth it. Gotta get it together

He could be charged with Invasive visual recording. But it doesn't look like they are going to pursue the case

We're talkin about a 16yr old boy right? Sorry, i doubt anything will be done outside a slap on the wrist.

If the facts of this are accurate, which nobody not even those from Carthage are disputing, he videotaped girls getting naked in the shower and the distributed it to  his friends and others. Surely you don't believe the "punishment" was sufficient.

Sounds like the possibility of winning took priority.

Child pornography is a serious matter.

At the time of the incident, it had nothing to do with football. Kid was on JV and no one was sold on him being QB. The family is saying that the school did not do enough to stop the video from distributing but I honestly don't know how that could have been done. All in all, my money is that he won't be the QB in Carthage next season.

With all the bonds passed and  first class facilities built on Carthage's campus the town folk better be hoping that the Superintendent was smart enough to purchase some top of the line liability insurance.

It sounds like the family that's going after them has a pretty strong case with even stronger lawyers. And those in the loop know this aint the first rodeo with this family and lawsuits.

Might be somewhat off topic but I read in the local paper where someone recently filed several complaints against Carthage High School with the TEA, Department of Justice, The Office of Civil Rights, and the Office of Equal Opportunity Commission stating that the students and staff are treated differently at the high school based on race. It was noted in the article that 3 students were severely punished and put in alternative school while the QB was not punished for video taping a girl in the shower. It also talked about the AD/Head Football Coach and Superintendent getting huge raises while at the same time the campus Police Officer was released from his duties for lack of funds.

Some crazy goings on in Championshipville, Tx.

I’m not going to speak much on this, but you guys are crazy if you think Surratt would risk his rep over a QB. They grow on trees in Carthage. When all this happened he was the JV QB, with zero garunatees he would be the starter on varsity. Look at the dates. And I promise Carthage did not need him to win a championship this year. There was 2-3 other kids that we would’ve won with. When you have 3 pretty much D1 receivers and the number 1 back in the state, a lot of kids would be “star quarterbacks”.

If the 100+ points listed in the suit are even close to accurate then Surratt did risk his rep. The fact is that the video was spread around on campus, viewed on campus, and supposedly one of the coaches actually shared the video himself. The principal, superintendent, and head coach Surratt were notified about the video.

All of this happened last year, the school becoming aware of the video and sharing, when the QB was the varsity QB and they were on their way to the Championship

They tried to sweep it under the rug. There's a law in Texas that a person in authority at school must notify police when they are aware of a possible crime. Carthage High didn't do that. In the suit it said the parent was told it was a he said/she said situation and nothing could be done. That right there shows they didn't follow proper procedures...possibly breaking the law by not going to police. They told the parent to go to police herself the suit says.

So, QB brings video on campus and spreads it around to other students, a coach spreads it himself, and the Principal, head coach Surratt, and the Superintendent knew about all of these accusations and supposedly didn't punish anyone at the same time not taking any action to help the victim...yeah, Surratt risked his rep

We'll see if his gamble was worth it

The suit says that Homeland Security had to come to town because the local PD sat on it. By the way, Coach Surratt's secretary just happens to be the local Chief of Police's wife. Imagine that.

The Feds scanned phones and found evidence of video and widespread distribution. Local DA did nothing until the State gave them a deadline to take action. When they finally took action this year...a year after being notified, they supposedly gave the kid pre-trial diversion.

The purpose for that was they had to do something, so did the absolute minimum. Also, this kept everything under wraps which was supposed to keep Carthage High from taking any responsibility in the matter and to escape detection that they possibly broke the law by not notifying police themselves, completely failed to protect one of their students so they could protect their Quarterback, head coach Surratt, the Principal, and the School Superintendent.

If you don't think this was corrupt, well, you'd fit right in on the Carthage coaching staff

This was in the fall of 2016 when the video was shared. I was taken during April of 2016. Kid wasn't even on Varsity and wasn't even the frontrunner for being QB the next season. Please leave football out of this.

You realize the difference between when the video was taken 2016...and when school was made aware 2017?

This has everything to do with football. School covered everything up in 2017. Why? Who was QB in 2017?

Heard some debate team members viewed it too, let's get rid of that also. Coach needs to be locked up and parents need to punished by the law.

If the head of the debate team recorded it...he'd be in jail. For some reason the QB that did was basically untouched. Everyone needs to remember there is a victim in all of this. Supposedly the school never even reached out to help or support her. Guessing, but doing that would open them up to liability. So cover-up. Another football championship. And a victim that isn't worth protecting?

Nobody is advocating for getting rid of the football team. That's ridiculous.  However, anybody involved in the act or the cover up, should be gone. Coach, player, administrator, or student.

Agree. How can any other way be fair? If it wasn't the championship QB and the brilliant head coach on their 6th? championship then the girl that was victimized repeatedly, and i guess is victimized to this day because carthage still denies anything happened, would have been supported. Suit says school counselor never even spoke to her??? Entire school passing this video around including coaches and counselor can't help young lady bc might hurt Football.

Sorry. There's more to life

If all this is true, the school district is about to be hit hard by this law suit. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in court.
