Now, this is don't agree with.  So when do you want them to play?  One team is always going to have the ball.  To me, that's part of the Friday night experience...

It actually is a rule not sure of the exact wording that the opposing team band is not supposed to start playing while the opposing team on offenseit's at the line of scrimmage. I have not seen it called around here but have seen it called in the Corpus and San Antonio area. Actually seen a game at Alamo stadium where the band got penalized twice and then kicked out of the game.

Guidelines for Bands Playing during Football Games. UIL Football games are conducted under NCAA Rules. As it relates to when a band may play during the game, the NCAA Football Rule Book states: Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals (NCAA Rule 1-1-6 and UIL Rule 9-2-1-b-5).

PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. 15 yards from the succeeding spot [S7 and S27]. Automatic first down for fouls by Team B if not in conflict with other rules. Flagrant offenders, if players or substitutes, shall be disqualified [S47]. To assist with compliance, consider the following procedures: • Have the band stop playing from the time the Offense (of either team) breaks the huddle until the ball is snapped. • Or, in the case of Offenses that do not huddle, have the band stop playing from the time the Center on Offense is over the ball until the ball is snapped.

I am not for banning them, just require that they be a minimum of 10 miles from the stadium. If you are down on the track, like I am, and that frazzling thing goes off, it is damaging to your ears. Newton's district has a ban on them along with the air horns in the stands.

What happened to propane tanks with rocks in them?? That seemed to be the loudest noise maker when I was in school.

I remember Stephenville in 1999 State Championship Game had giant propane cans with ball bearings in them that they shook almost constantly.  PNG put up a sign on our side that said, "For Noise, We don't need cans, We have fans!!!"  Love those memories.

I remember how they kept shaking those things to try and drown out Cherokee, but every time the band played it, they were shaking the ball bearings in beat to Cherokee by the end of the song. It made for a neat effect.
