ALDINE — Orange County came away with four powerlifters bringing home bronze medals from the State Powerlifting Championships held at the Campbell Center in Aldine Saturday.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville seniors Chris Sonnier and Kevin Greer nabbed third-place in their divisions along with Bridge City’s Justin Norman and West Orange-Stark’s Mario Rose.

Sonnier placed third in the 114-pound class with 1,040 pounds. Greer was third in the 132-pound division with 1.095 pounds, setting new personal marks in both the dead-lift (470 pounds) and total weight.

“It’s been so great to work with two special kids,†said LC-M powerlifting coach Brian Waguespack. “They left their marks on the powerlifting program. They may not have brought back go ld but they’ll always be winners in my book.â€

WO-S’ Mario Rose nabbed third in the 181-pound class with 1,355 pounds while teammate Cedric Dantzler was eighth in the 114-pound division with 780 pounds.

“It really was a great trip and we’ve had so much fun with those guys this season,†said Mustang coach Randy Crouch. “Mario did a great job all year and Cedric constantly improved. We had two reach state this year, which says a lot, because we had no one qualify last year.â€

Bridge City, which claimed the Region III team title for the first time in school history earlier this month, had six lifters participate in the state meet.

Justin Norman claimed third for the Cardinals in the 198-pound division, lifting a total of 1,410 pounds.

Kris Wedekind was sixth in the 198-pound class with 1,365 pounds. Garrett McNeil placed sixth in the 181-pound division with 1,235 pounds. Tim Sharp was seventh in the 132-pound class with 1,045 pounds. Kurt Moerbe claimed seventh in the 181-pound division with 1,225 pounds and Clint DeRouen, who had a great senior season did extremely well in the bench and squat but had to scratch after the dead-lift.

“We were really looking to do better at state but it doesn’t take anything away from what has been a great season,†said Cardinal coach Kevin Jones. “The kids were able to claim the school’s first-ever regional team championship and I’m so thrilled for our seniors. The best thing about it is that we have three of the kids coming back next year.â€
