Arkansas fires Heath, eyeing Gillispie

FOXSports.com

Arkansas coach Stan Heath was fired this afternoon after leading his team to consecutive 20-win seasons and a berth in the NCAA tournament this season, according to sources close to the Razorbacks program.

Heath was informed by Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles just hours ago and will receive a setttlement in the vicinity of $1 million.

According to the same sources, Heath will likely be replaced by Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie. One source even maintained that Gillispie has agreed in principle and could be introduced as soon as Monday.

Gillispie has led Texas A&M to a 70-26 record over the past three seasons. The Aggies reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last year and were eliminated in the Sweet 16 this season.

Arkansas finished 21-14 this past season and returns nearly everyone while the Aggies lose Acie Law IV and potentially big man Joseph Jones.

There are all kinds of rumors going around right now.

From the Houston Chronicle:

It appears Texas A&M men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie is headed for a contract extension and a raise as reward for a record-breaking Sweet 16 season and perhaps to ward off overtures from other programs.

Texas A&M is perhaps acting fast because of rumors of Arkansas' and Kentucky's interest in Gillispie for their recently vacated head-coaching positions. Reports today have Gillispie already in Fayetteville, Ark., interviewing for the Razorbacks post just hours after Stan Heath was fired. Another report had the school prepared to introduce Gillispie as the head coach as early as today.

The problem with both of those rumors is that Gillispie is in his office at Texas A&M, according to several people in the athletic department, including associate athletic director Alan Cannon and associate sports information director Colin Killian.

Also Gillispie was supposedly meeting with Arkansas donors yesterday, while at the same time in College Station having dinner with the AD.

The problem with the whole "40 minutes of heck" is that it only lasted for what seemed like 40 minutes...totall.  When was the last time Arkansas basketball was relevant?  Seems like a lateral - if not downward - move to me.

Cherchez d'largent!

I would agree it is a small step if not a lateral move.  Nolan Richardson resurrected he Eddie Sutton "glory years"  I think all that really matters is the $$$$$$, no matter where the program is.

Arkansas coach Stan Heath was fired Monday afternoon after leading his team to consecutive 20-win seasons and a berth in the NCAA tournament this season, according to sources close to the Razorbacks program.

Heath was informed by Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles earlier Monday and will receive a settlement in the vicinity of $1 million.

According to the same sources, Heath could be replaced by Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie. One source even maintained that Gillispie has agreed in principle to a contract with Arkansas, although one Aggie recruit who spoke to Gillispie on Monday indicated differently.

"He said that everything out there was false, that if he ever left he'd let us all know first, and not to pay any attention to it," said Texas A&M signee B.J. Holmes. "The first time I spoke to him about it was when there was speculation he was going to Kentucky, and I just talked to him again not even 10 minutes ago."

A sweetened deal is in the works for Texas A&M basketball coach Billy Gillispie, but if Arkansas has its way, the Aggies' offer might be too little, too late.

As word broke Monday that the A&M Board of Regents prepared an enhanced financial package for Gillispie, scheduled for approval this week, word also quickly spread that Arkansas has Gillispie on its radar.

Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles fired Stan Heath on Monday afternoon, following back-to-back 20-win seasons that included invitations to the NCAA Tournament.

Gillispie's good friend (and a former basketball player at Arkansas) said that these were all rumors and he didn't know where they were coming from.  He said BCG was happy in CS and he expected him to sign a new contract with A&M on Thursday.

A&M is the better job by far....he's starting a legit program in College Station and it would be crazy for him to leave unless....the money is an absurd amount.  I agree with JMay that this would be a lateral move if not maybe a small step back.  He has DeAndre Jordan the 7 footer coming in next year and they're gonna be one of the best in the country.  I just don't see why he'd leave right now!

This is from the blog of the writer that is assigned to follow A&M athletics for the Houston Chronicle:

This just in on Gillispie ...

Texas A&M men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie was seen sitting in his office for the second day in a row...LOL!

Seriously, there appears to be no movement on the Gillispie to Arkansas front so far today. In fact, names like Lon Kruger and Bill Self are now being linked as possible candidates for the Razorbacks sudden opening.

Gillispie, meanwhile, has gone on as business as usual, according to those close around him. He is making plans to leave Wednesday for the Final Four in Atlanta with senior point guard Acie Law, who is up for several awards and will partcipate in the 3-point shooting contest.

The only new development is that senior forward Marlon Pompey will join Gillispie and Law and will participate in the slam dunk contest.
