KFDM COOP Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 Old high school baseball rivals Brad Sullivan and Kyle Stutes could face off again this summer in the California League. Sullivan, a Nederland native and No.. 1 draft pick by the Oakland A's in 2003, and Stutes, a Port Neches-Groves product and high draft pick by San Diego in 2004, were assigned by those major league organization to their respective teams in the "high A" league. Stutes will be with the Lake Elsinore Storm, part of a steady progress through the minors after going 1-2 with a 2.42 ERA in 45 relief appearances in a "low A" league last year. Sullivan, a starter with the Stockton Ports, is trying to jumpstart a career stalled the last two summers by injuries. Also in "high A" (at Greenville, S.C.) will be Lumberton-ex Clay Buchholz, last year's 42nd overall pick by the Red Sox. After going 12-6 as a starter and earning a spot in the Class A all-star game last year, Nederland native J esse Floyd is starting this season at the San Francisco Giants' AA franchise in Norwich, Conn. Brian Sanches, another pitcher from Nederland, is at AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Pa., after just missing the cut with the Philadelphia Phillies. He finished off a scoreless preseason with an inning and a third of shutout pitching for the Phillies in an exhibition win over Boston Sunday. Other area players starting the season in the minors include former major leaguers Ben Weber (at AAA Syracuse), Jason Tyner (at AAA Rochester) and Chip Ambres (at AAA Omaha). Weber and Tyner's new teams are both in the International League. Omaha is in the Pacific Coast League.
