PN-G’s Spikes tames Broncos

PORT NECHES -- You could call sophomore Jerin Spikes a horse whisperer for the way he calmed Dayton’s Broncos Tuesday night.

Port Neches-Groves Jay Stone calls him “closer.â€

“I guess if you could call anybody our closer, he is,†the veteran Indian coach said after Spikes struck out three of the four batters he faced in preserving an 11-9 win by the Indians.

“He’s consistent about throwing strikes, a great competitor.â€

Spikes came on in relief of a worn-out Eric Harrington with two outs in a sixth inning that had seen the Broncos buck wild for six runs. He struck out the Matt Broyles, the 10th batter of the inning, to end the sixth.

Then he struck out the first two Dayton batters in the seventh before Bronc shortstop Andy Dewey managed to get his bat on a ball, lofting a flyout to right.

The victory gives PN-G’s District 22-4A leaders a perfect 7-0 record at the end of the league’s first round of play. The Indians are 14-7 overall.

“We were fortunate to get through the first round undefeated,†Stone said. “The second round is going to be much tougher. A lot of the teams that started off slow, they’re coming around.â€

Vidor beat Little Cypress-Mauriceville Tuesday to tie the Bears for second in 22-4A at 5-2. Dayton,13-7 overall, fell to fourth place at 4-3.

Harrington was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, Payton Faseler and Shawn Flores were each 2 for 4. Flores knocked in three runs and Jeremy Dominguez had an RBI triple and scored on the play on a Dayton throwing error.

The Broncos committed four errors and pitchers Frank Smesny, Jake Pickle and Colton Crote combined to issue 10 bases on balls. Twice Indian batters struck out on big breaking balls, but reached base when the pitches bounced away from the catcher.

Pickle’s two-run single gave Dayton a 2-0 lead in the first, but PN-G responded with a three-spot of its own. Harrington led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch. Flores knocked in Drew Barnett and Jon Carnahan, who had both walked.

Dayton tied the game in the second when DH Cody Green reached on an error and scored on the second of David Howard’s three hits.

The Indians went up 4-3 in the bottom of the third when Barnett singled home Barnett, who had reached via an error. PN-G then proceeded to score twice in the fourth and five times in the fifth for an 11-3 run.

Dominguez’ triple scored Kane Benoit, who had walked, and Dominguez scored when Pickle threw wildly to third to make it 6-3. In the fifth, Harrington doubled home Spikes, who had walked, and Brett Doty, who reached on a bunt single. Harrington scored on a double steal; Faseler, who singled, scored on a wild pitch; and Barnett, who singled, came home on an errant pickoff throw.
