The senior is one of 10 high school basketball players from Southeast Texas named a finalist for the fifth annual James Gamble "Mr. Inside" and "Mr. Outside" Awards, which will be presented at a 6:30 p.m. banquet Saturday, April 14, at Lamar State College-Port Arthur's Carl Parker Center. The Gamble Award finalists will play an all-star game against a team of Houston-area stars at 8 p.m. Friday, April 13, also at the Parker Center. The Gamble Awards pay tribute to Port Arthur's living legend, a coach who led Lincoln High to four state championships in the 1980s. Their purpose is to recognize the best high school basketball players in Southeast Texas. Previous "Mr. Outside" Award winners include West Brook's Trey McDowell (2003), Kountze's Keithan Hancock (2004), Ozen's Roderick Bellard (2005) and Richard. Past "Mr. Inside" Award winners are Ozen's Kendrick Perkins (2003), Kountze's Ashton Hall (2004, 2005) and Memorial’s Dominique Keller (2006). Kendrick Perkins, Ozen (2003 Mr. Inside) – A first-round NBA pick in 2003, Perkins is in his fourth season with Boston Celtics, the last two as a starter. He is averaging 4.5 points and 5 rebounds per game. Trey McDowell, West Brook (2003 Mr. Outside) – Just wrapped up his collegiate career at Louisiana Tech, where he was a second-team all-conference pick in the WAC, averaging 13.7 points to lead his team in scoring. Keena Young, Ozen (2003 finalist) – Senior was Mountain West Conference Player of the Year for Brigham Young University and an honorable mention AP All-American. Young led BYU with 17.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Clarence Matthews, Central (2003 finalist) – Senior earned second straight second-team all-league honors in the Ohio Valley Conference after scoring 12.7 points and averaging 7.7 rebounds for Tennessee State. Ashton Hall, Kountze (2004, 2005 Mr. Inside) – The only two-time James Gamble Award winner, Hall is transferring to Lamar University after being a third-team all-conference pick for Angelina Junior College. He averaged 15.6 points and 3.8 rebounds and made third-team all-conference for Angelina. Keithan Hancock, Kountze (2004 Mr. Outside) -- A redshirt sophomore at Northwestern (La.) State, Hancock averaged 6.4 points as the Demons’ sixth man this season. Justin Ballou, Memorial (2004 finalist) – Junior was an honorable mention pick in NAIA’s Red River Conference for Austin’s Huston-Tillotson College, averaging 5.6 points and 2.8 assists per game. Anthony Collins, Central (2004 finalist) – A two-sport star in high school, the 6-6, 300-pound Collins was honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference last fall as a redshirt sophomore offensive tackle for Kansas University’s football team. Roderick Bellard, Ozen (2005 Mr. Outside) – A sophomore at NAIA St. Mary’s in San Antonio, Bellard averaged 6.5 points and more than 20 minutes per game coming off the bench for the Rattlers this season. Dominique Keller, Memorial (2006 Mr. Inside) – A freshman at Baytown’s Lee College, he finished fourth in scoring in the Region XIV conference with 18.1 points per game. He snared 6.4 rebounds per game and was honorable mention all-conference. Brandon Moton, Central (2006 finalist) – A freshman at Angelina College, he averaged 8.1 points per game for Angelina. The James Gamble Awards selection committee added Antoine, a senior guard and first-team All-District 21-5A pick, after Awards finalist Tramain Thomas of East Chambers injured his leg in a track meet last Thursday.The pulled quadriceps muscle makes Thomas a doubtful participant in the game against a Houston all-star team, set to begin at 8 p.m. Friday.Antoine averaged 14 points per game for the Bruins. He was an all-tournament team selection at the YMBL South Texas Shootout and the San Antonio Cornerstone Warrior Classic.The James Gamble Awards were created by Port Arthuran Ray Depwe in 2003 to honor the top high school basketball players in Southeast Texas.
