Yeah but it seems like more kids have the “one sport” mentality these days.

There a few kids who played with Shug as children but never cared to play in high school and now they play either basketball, baseball, or soccer exclusively so that they can work on what they are best at I assume. Wish a few of them wouldve come along for the ride

Both teams are irrelevant. Neither are going anyway outside Round 2. This thread is Silsbee/Lumberton. With Lumberton as banged up as they are, who knows how they finish. LCM is trash at full health.

Coming from a guy that doesn't even support a HS on here don't mean much to me.

Bottom line is predominately white football teams in southeast Texas are going to be mediocre at best(on a year in year out basis).

But why?  There are many predominantly white teams around that compete at a high level year in and year out...  What are they doing that we aren't?  We're serious about our football as they are...

There is a difference in being serious about football, and being SERIOUS about football. We like to think this area lives and breathes the game and what not. The difference is the serious kids, white or black, in the DFW area and others actually live and breathe the game, the good teams anyway. Not just August to November. That may not be an opinion that is accepted but I bet the Highland Park kids do 100x more football than what we do here.

Like what?  There at restrictions for what you can do in the off-season.  I know some of our teams push the envelope, but you should see the equal amount of success for our teams just like those other teams...

Private parent-paid coaches. Like the private hitting/pitching instructors for baseball lessons. I am meaning like kids taking more of an initiative outside of the school ball stuff. I could be wrong, but I can definitely see that type of stuff being different.

That comes down to money, not desire.   Comparing Highland Park and some of the Houston areas to this area is apples to oranges.

The question is why it is better in other areas. Regardless if it is about money, that is one of the answers. For the record there are thousands of kids in this area that pay for private baseball and basketball coaches and pay to be on select teams and travel ball teams. Money is an issue for some not for all, and I would venture to guess it is not the issue for the majority. That is an excuse.

I disagree, actually with the whole premise as I have already had this discussion before not even a week ago.  I don't want to rehash that whole thread again, but  there are teams (white teams as you put it) in this area that have made deep runs  fairly recently in the playoffs and can always do it again if everything falls right.  There is always a modicum of luck involved in a deep run ,  the playoff draw, a fumble goes the right way, weather.   I have seen teams from here win playoff games that no one picked them to win many times.  That's what makes the playoffs interesting.

I'm sure its hard for some parents to get their kids to some camps. I pay a good bit of money for position specific camps and it does help. But also their are situations where players positions changes ( linebacker to guard) and the parents feel like they have wasted their money.

I didn't put it that way. There has been a handful of people in the last couple of weeks put it that way, I have not. I try to stay away from that. I'm confused on what you disagree with. We seems to be on the same page.  I am assuming that you disagree that other areas take a more active approach to winning rather than hoping to make a run every few years or hoping to get a fumble or pick six? I don't have the data but I would bet the farm that the teams that are consistently in the mix every year, do more than just breed the athletes. It has to be a lifestyle to win big time highschool football games. It's not a August to November life and win a title. It has to be your job year around, and I imaging that those teams that are in it every year dedicate their time and money to winning it. Idk, everybody has opinions.

    • I’m super excited for this game.  PNG has the team and game plan that will slow TH down.  No way we can stop them the entire game, but I feel if we slow them down we can win similar to what we did last year to Lake Creek and SOC.
    • Well Mustang fans it's time for my annual end of season rant. I've had so much company up here on the soapbox that I may have to start charging rent. After 3 years I don't think anything needs to be said. We all know what's wrong. We all know why. So what's the decision at the next board meeting? IMO, there's been enough imaginary success for the board to rubber stamp the Superintendent's vision for our future student athletes. #make every second count Due to soft scheduling and a weaker than normal district. The luck of knocking off 2 ranked opponents early when they were not healthy or still trying to figure it out. Also led to a premature ranking and a hollow DCTF weekly award. The 2 late season losses vs ranked teams proves what we know has been the biggest problem.  Football 19-15 .559 Baseball 9-35 .205 Basketball 19-35 .352 GBB 11-29 .275 Softball 1-22 .043 Volleyball 0-38 .000 Overall 59-174 .253   For anyone living in the district, I ask that you contact you're elected board members publicly and privately. Don't let them think this is exceptable. Be the solution to the equation. Not the divisor. This starts at the top and falls heavily upon those walking the halls. They deserve better.
    • I don't think it's 6-5 maybe 4-3
    • Sounds like a good idea, and something’s been needed for a long time. I know—where my kids & grandkids live now (DFW area)—schools are like revolving doors for athletic purposes. I don’t think the DPISD & LPISD option enrollment are anywhere like that. I assume it’s pretty above board since it was an arrangement apparently agreed to also by the state. I do know some kids that went to LPISD elementary schools in DP chose to go to DPHS because of the district rating. (Of course, at the time, DPISD and DP in general wasn’t very racially mixed like La Porte.) LPISD has a high number of kids on assistance programs compared to DP. Say what you will, it does make it more difficult for educational purposes and scores can reflect as much. LPISD is still rated high even with that challenge. Some of the kids that chose DPHS were very solid athletes that I’m sure LP would love to have had attend LPHS. Of course, part of the big rivalry between DP & LP has always been because DP ‘looked down’ on LP even though we worked side-by-side. Now that Shell DP refinery has been sold to PEMEX, DP is changing. Some aren’t happy about it. Some of us in LP are kinda tickled about it after the history.
