A top 4 QB in PNG history. Second, PNG plays finesse football, and one side of the ball. 3rd, winning MCM means a lot to both, but way more to Nederland. IMO it keeps Nederland on the map, like us or hate us, PNG can get state recognition because of the brand. 4th, Nederland history, to me, is kinda mediocre. It's built on district championships, mostly, co district championships, and short playoff runs. But mainly it's year is built on beating PNG. There's no sense to bring up the past, we all know it doesn't compare. In my time, Nederland has made 2 good runs. PNG has made 2 good runs, one was to the 16th game. Before that it was severely lopsided. As I said in the other post, Nederland is a different brand at this time. I think they beat PNG this year, and the next 2 after. The rah rahs like to talk it up, but BF has had IMO, 2 of the top 5 QBs, in PNG history, and has been to the 3rd round with each. Doty and Shug. If PNG, had a Barrow type, things might be different. For the PNG fans that said MB only won because of Dustin Long, eat your words!!! Shug is in the talk with DL. And we see how that's gone with Nederland and a SC appearance. MB coached defense and special teams and struggled with offense. BF coaches offense... Special teams, defense, and team discipline are At an all time low with him. Last but not least, for the rah rahs on the other site. They cry and complain because that's what they do. I don't read it or get on it because it's a political board where you can't speak your mind. Fancy this, any other coach in PNG history would build a defense around Shug, and Let him do his thing... For the Nederland fans, enjoy it now, honestly it pains me to see it happen, but I don't see a day where PNG runs off a streak again. I think Nederland is better prepared , better coached, and gives 110%... I think Mathews has Vidor doing the same thing. I will not be surprised to lose to both. I wouldn't be surprised if we beat both. In conclusion, and this is a straight jab to all the Bulldog mouths.. When your built on Traditon, and History... It's hard for folks built on mediocrity to understand. One has always rode the coat Tails of the other. Bottom line. So for the poster that was there in 91-92, you understand, now your enjoying the good times. I'm with you, I would be too. PNG has not been much a threat to Nederland since 94. So thank me and my classmates for getting Mr. LN over to you. I'm not saying we built your program, but us kicking you down every year helped!!!!! My prediction are this. PNG will struggle to get the 4 seed. Dustin Long did it without a offense built for the QB to have monster numbers that BF runs. Doty had raw talent more than RJ. Long and Doty are two are your two best qbs. BMTSoulja1

Although a long time ago, I was told he was a leader beyond imagination, and when he got you in the huddle, and had that look in his eyes, you knew it was ON... And He has a ring to boot. As I stated, Shug is a top 4 all day long. Hard to compare apples to oranges, but as long as your in that convo, that's good for me. In no order, Ethridge, Long, Doty, Shug.. Next in line, Robertson, Musser, Morse. And I'm basing it on wins, big wins, hardware, and rings. But the top 4 are far and above the next tier. RoschonsBigBro
Wish we had good bbq joints here. And boy do i miss a good boudin link! Thats about the only thing i miss about setx. You would think New orleans of all places would have it but nope. Seafood for days though. As far as the game I think png wins, dont really have a score prediction because i dont know what this team will bring week in and week out. Just a w is fine for me. Lets just go 1-0 this week. The deal is, since PNG can no longer beat Ned, the Vidor vs Ned game has become the big rivalry game (forget the fact that Vidor can't beat Ned either lol). It's officially called TCM - Two County Madness. Nothing to compare it to. VPATH, bulldawg64 and RoschonsBigBro

Realville
Should be an exciting game. Maybe we can sneak a W out of the Rez. Tough place to play. I have to admit I am excited that Shug will be wearing the burnt orange soon. Coach Herman has that team headed in the right direction. They’ve got a great recruiting class coming in. Hookem Horns! We want to beat the hell out of everyone, even if it doesn't work that way. A victory against Nederland is only a district W and district is never the goal. District should be expected, especially when you have such highly ranked and rated Qbs coming out PNG every few years. Nederland is not that important, as satisfying a W against them is. Shug's list of goals as an 8th grader was to be starting Qb by 10th grade, break PNG records, become the best player there ever, become the Longhorns 2019 Qb recruit, and take this team to a state championship win. He was able to do all but one. Beating Nederland wasn't on that list because in the grand scheme of all those lofty goals, winning against a district foe was much too small and to be honest, expected. Maybe when PNG as a whole gets this mentality again some big changes can be made. If you can't beat Nederland you are definitely not going very far in the playoffs so yes the Nederland game is very important to players and fans. If BF can't beat Nederland this year, I would hate to see how many for sale signs will be put in his yard.

Rez
Putting for-sale signs in a coach's yard is a trash, garbage, inexcusable move. Also, given how far this thread has gotten from the Vidor game, I am beginning to empathize with Vidorians' frustrations with PNG and Nederland fans. PNG 45-Vidor 21. PNG's defense has varied from season to season (mostly varying between "ok" and "good grief what is happening?") but a constant from season to season is that we stop Vidor. Another constant is Vidor doesn't stop PNG's offense. There is no indicator that anything will be different on Friday. jake94, Fortheloveofthegame, NDNation and 1 other

I hope this year is different, but it’ll take physical dominance of the Pirate OL. And on D, keeping RJ contained (no easy feat), & the Pirate secondary not letting folks behind them. It’s a conundrum. Rez

It’s a conundrum. Rambling, ill-prepared thoughts ahead: If Vidor can get ahead early and do something to throw off the PNG offense, it could be interesting. If PNG has a few series with dropped passes like against Tomball, and Vidor capitalizes on offense, the game is theirs to lose. But I think Vidor's biggest problem (and also strength, with a new district) is familiarity. Vidor does what I call "playing on the margins" (I don't know if I heard the term somewhere, or if I'm making something up. I think I've heard it somewhere) -- They have an offense that no one (for the most part) else uses, and they bank on the other teams' defenses not being able to prepare in just a week of practice. Navy does it. BYU used to do it in the 70s and 80s, with the air raid. That's why Vidor has kept it close against Crosby the last few times they've played (or every time they've played?), including winning one of the matchups. The problem with that strategy is if the team already knows you, the element of surprise is gone. PNG and Vidor know each other pretty well, so it comes down to offensive efficiency. Vidor's offense is deliberately, and by definition, not efficient (in terms of a points-per-play ratio), because it is designed to drag out the game, slugging out long drives. PNG's offense is built on scoring quickly and often. It is hard for Vidor's secondary to prepare for PNG's receivers because Vidor does not have a corp of elite receivers to practice against, or a QB to replicate what the spread offenses bring. That isn't a criticism though, because Vidor has chosen not to have those things, and to each his own. I guess my point is that choice comes with a cost in terms of familiarity and preparation. I think PNG's receivers will find enough open space and make enough plays to open up the run, and then Vidor is on its heels. Good luck to Vidor in any case, and I'll be sure to tip my hat if I'm wrong and they pull out the win against us. It was heartbreaking to hear about the loss against Crosby. Nothing against Crosby, but that win would have been a shot heard 'round Texas. Hagar and Bigdog

Nothing against Crosby, but that win would have been a shot heard 'round Texas. I’d have to agree. Vidors offense usually puts up enough points points to win but I think one of the biggest problems has been getting off the field on 3rd and very long. We get off the field on 3rd and long then we get to eat up more clock and possibly put up some more points on the board. Another thing I’ve noticed all the years that I’ve watched them is when there on offense is they hike the ball with sometimes 15 to 20 seconds still on the play clock. I personally would run the play clock down to at least 5 seconds on every play. It’s a ball control offense so control the ball as long as you can. Shorten the game. Hopefully we can get enough stops so our offense can do there thing. Either way I know the kids always play hard for Matthews an never quit. That’s what makes watching them so enjoyable. May this is the week they put 4 solid quarters together. Go Pirates!! Rez

Vp30
If we can pull out a win at the Rez and that's a big IF it won't be because lack of points, you can't shut out PNG only hope to slow them down. Problem is PNG seems to have Vidors O in check. They will try to shut down the fullback and make Vidor beat them with sweeps which they're linebackers usually read pretty quick. Going to have to get a TO or 2 and learn how to play with a lead. Vidor-35 PNG-34, PNG fails 2 point to avoid OT KF89
