Deweyville's Dooley takes two 24-2A races

WINNIE — Deweyville’s Joe Dooley was a two-time gold medal winner Friday at the District 24-2A Track & Field Championships held at East Chambers High School.

Dooley took gold in the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.59 and then took first in the 1,600 meters with a finishing time of 4:56.40.

Dooley and several other Pirate tracksters will now compete at the Class 2A Region III Track & Field Championships held at Palestine High School April 27-28.

The Pirates’ boy squad finished in third place with 94 points behind second place finisher East Chambers who had 110 points and first place Kountze who had 116 points.

Also highlighting the boy’s side for Deweyville was Terry Knight who came in third in the 3,200 meters with 11:39.69 finish. Nicholas Santel of Buna was first in the event with a time of 11:31.97 and Stoney Burk of Anahuac was second with a time of 11:32.12.

Knight was also third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:09.83 while Santel of Buna was second with a time of 5:07.73.

The boys team also placed third in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:37.12. Kountze was first with a time of 1:33.63 and East Chambers was second with a time of 1:34.

Shean Brinson of Deweyville was second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.59. Brandon Pouch of Warrren was first with a time of 42.32 and Kendall Barrow of East Chambers was third with a 44.24 finish.

In the boy’s field events Tim Swinney of Deweyville is headed to the regionals in the long jump with a burst of 19-3 1/2, a jump equaled by Anahuac’s Kelby Shandy-Kerby. Eugene Leday of East Chambers was third at 19-1.

Blake Peveto of Deweyville came in second in the shot put with a toss of 43-4, just behind Harvey Gore of Warren who finished with a hurl of 46-2. Warren’s Travis Swanson placed third with a throw of 42-7 3/4.

Warren finished fourth with 85 total points, Anahuac was fifth with 83.5, Buna was sixth with 64.5 points and Hardin was seventh with 62 points.

On the girl’s side of the meet Marissa Powell placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 28.61 behind Shakita Webb of Anahuac with time of 25.11. Stormy Morris of Warren was third at 26.61.

Tera Gibson of Deweyville is headed to regional in the long jump after placing third with a jump of 14-8 1/2. Webb of Anahuac was first at 16-9 1/2 and Ajante Russell of Anahuac was second at 15-9.

Deweyville’s Christina Caswell placed third in the 400 meters with a finish time of 1:07.9. Charla Thomas of East Chambers was first at 1:02.8 and McKenah Whalen of Hardin was second with a time of 1:07.2.

Anahuac took first overall with a whopping 217 points while Kountze was a distant second with 119 overall points. East Chambers came in third with 118 points, Hardin was fourth with 58 points, Buna had 46 points for fifth place, Deweyville was sixth with 30 points and Warren was seventh with 23 points.

On Thursday in East Chambers the Deweyville Track team had eleven athletes qualify for the regional meet in Palestine. They are Blake Peveto (shot put), Tim Swinney (long jump,4x200,4x400), Sean Brinson (300 hurdles,4x200), Stephen Gibson (4x200,4x400), Ethan Williams (4x200,4x400), Jimmy Folsom (4x400), Joe Dooley (800,mile), and TJ Knight (mile). Girls Tera Gibson (long jump), Christina Caswell (400), Marissa Powell (200). Joe Dooley was the district champion in the mile and the 800 meter run.
