The e-mail that Coach Hurley (Livingston girls basketball coach) sent me just had these games listed for the 3 days for the girls.  The boys side actually had a bracket for the last day.

Yea, so the boys are doing pool play style tournament.  I thought the girls were too, but looks like the girls side is more like a 'shootout' or 'classic'...

I’m not even about to try and post the Tournament Bracket PNG is playing in. It’s hard to read on paper. Headed to Brownsboro against some quality East TX competition. We play Elysia Field in first bracket game tomorrow at 12:45.

How are ya'll doing up north?

                          1Q      2Q      3Q     4Q      Final

PNG                   14      13       15       1        43

Elysian Fields      7       10        6       14       37

I have no idea what happened to us in the 4th Qtr. It was almost like the waking up early and the 4 hour drive zapped them in the 4th.

                          1Q      2Q      3Q     4Q      Final

PNG                     4      13       12      10        39

Chapel Hill         15       9        10       11       45

This one we had a hangover in the 1st Qtr from previous game 4th period, got a boost of energy in the second and third but we would get it to 4 points and never get it closer. The first Qtr hurt.

We are not sure who we play today at 3:30 yet, it’s win or go home now. We finally got the news back last night about the injury that happened against you guys and it is a torn ACL and obviously she is out for the season which is a huge blow to us. The girls are going to have to step up in her absence!

Great showing on first day - EF is always good and Chapel Hill is #2 in the state 3A - think they are 17-0 on the season.    Keep representing SETX for us!!

Torn ACL - Hate to hear that for ya'll.     We had our second leading scorer go down with knee injury against Chireno - and just got MRI results back this week - were expecting torn ACL too but had better news - stretched ligaments and bruised -  expected to back for us about the time we begin district.

We had it to a 4 point game with just under 3 minutes left missed a free throw, got the rebound  and missed the put back when the score was 50-46 and then they finished it off with a 7-2 run after we had went on a 10-5 run, have to learn how to finish the games we claw back into.

Let me just say this too. I hate tournament refs. We didn’t lose because of the refs, but it sure does not favor the Lady Indians game play.

I just hate tournaments!  Lol.  Pool play kills us.  6 games in 3 days doesn’t work to good for a team of 7 players!  Lol.

What ever happened to just good ol bracket style?

Again, girls game will degenerate into football if refs don't call hand checking, body out of bounds, etc.Lack of basketball skill favors "physical" play and lack of foul calls gives a more "physically talented" roster an advantage that I do not know is fair. If it is allowed it is not a foul and one has to deal with it. Girls game has a certain amount of physicality to it sense it is below the rim basketball, but it has to remain basketball at some point, and you can not have that if "physicality" passes as no foul called basketball. Ok, my rant, is over, and I did it with out getting yelled at in a gym, LOL.

Most coaches want pool play to get more games in then they would using bracket style but I understand if you only have 7 on your roster...

Any time you have a chance to gain experience and have to deal with questionable officiating, and it doesn't punish you in terms of district play, I guess maybe take the bitter with the sweet and hopefully the team learns from it. I find tournament play away from home removes the girls from facing foes they see most of the time, which makes potential iffy officiating and different style of play a bit easier to deal with, cuz there is not the additional pressure of having to deal with what is expected out of local matchups give you.

Lot of teams seem to link growth of team to overall success of overall record of early season games, irregardless of who the opponent is.  My take is how is how  is everyone gonna end up after district play in that scenario?. Pre-district play, tournament and individual games, can go a long way to the development of a team's potential, if a coach decides to put their team in a situation where their early record may suffer, but their quality of play will benefit from the difficult conditions they are exposed to. Interesting contrast of styles, not sure what best answer is.

We had a scheduled 3:30 game, games were scheduled 1 hr and 15 minutes apart throughout the day. The game started at 3:00. So first off a normal varsity game typically last 1 hr and 30 to 45 minutes, so in order to run 30 minutes ahead the refs are barely calling fouls. I noticed really quick that if a defender just blew up the ball handler no foul was called so I started yelling that to the girls. They finally listened to the annoying obnoxious dad in the stands and we got 6 steals in a row, that should have been 6 fouls, lol. Then the girls reverted back to their normal defense. The only “fouls” these refs would call was if a shot was put up and a block was attempted and ball was missed (no contact necessary and went both ways). One particular play I almost got thrown out of the gym for was when it looked like Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka came off of the top turn buckle with a flying cross body check and not one whistle between three refs. All that i got was a hand from a ref and then she turned around and told me to shut up!

I agree.  these pool play tournaments all most always have one or two jv teams in them now to get the 6 games.  I would just rather have 3 or 4 good games out of a bracket - winners advance so win and play good teams.  6 in 3 days is just too much IMO.  I also need to adjust my thinking a little for those tournaments and bring along a few jv players.  I just focuseon my rotation and getting those varsity girls better each game. -

We picked up another game today. They found out last night late after I had already headed home and they played Rusk and lost again by 4 or 6 points. Another one where it looked like they were going to come back and get the win and allowed a late run. Girls had a bad weekend, then to top it off the bus broke down 4 hours away from home. Finally got it repaired and are headed home. Need to get back on track Tuesday at home against Huffman Hargrove before first district game on Friday. They fought hard and are still struggling to adjust to losing their friend for the year. On a bright note, the one victory the got matched last seasons win total. So improvement. The hard part is getting past the expectations we as parents have. They are playing hard, just in a slump. The rock will fall again.
