WEST ORANGE — At the beginning of Monday’s game against the Orangefield Bobcats, West Orange-Stark Coach Derrick Rivers called out to his team it expected to lose.

There was not too much hooting and hollering even when leadoff hitter Earl Thomas smacked a home run in the bottom of the first.

Third baseman Will Shafer changed all that in the bottom of the seventh as his double propelled the Mustangs to a 5-4 win over the Bobcats.

Shafer’s no-out double to center gave courtesy runner Jeremy Phares plenty of time to score and moved the Mustangs to 2-9 in District 21-3A play and 3-13-2 overall.

Orangefield fell to 9-11 overall and 3-8 in the district standings.

Justin Gearhart led the bottom of the seventh off with a walk and Phares immediately came in to run.

Terry Veitch then reached base and advanced the runner on an Orangefield error.

A wild pitch advanced to scoring position at second and third before Shafer sent the fans home with his late inning heroics.

“We have been playing good ball the last few weeks,†Rivers said. “We have a couple of freshmen who moved up from JV so there is a real competitive nature on the team right now.â€

Justin Gearhart was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs after he hurled 4 2/3 innings giving up one run on four hits with one walk and four strike outs.

Gearhart came in for relief of Casey Tarver who pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up three runs on six hits with one walk and one strike out.

Orangefield freshman Jacob Felts absorbed the loss after tossing the complete game. He gave up five runs on seven hits with four strike outs and seven walks.

The Bobcats carried a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth but with one down Chase Adams ripped a double to left field and scored when Cody Hodge hit a RBI single to left.

Hodge was called out during the next batter on a fielder’s choice and the Mustangs then loaded the bases on a walk and hit batter.

Felts settled down and got Jacoby Franks to fly out to first to end the threat.

Orangefield got on the board first as center fielder Jace Statum led the game off with a single to center and moved all the way to third when Possum LaFleur laid down a nice bunt.

The ball rolled up the third baseline and nestled on the chalk. WO-S did not cover third and Statum used heads up base running to take the extra base.

Felts then helped himself out with a RBI single to left scoring Statum for a 1-0 Orangefield lead.

The lead did not last long as Thomas sent a Felts’ offering in the bottom of the first over the right field fence, his fifth homer of the season.

With one down, Franks hit an infield single and eventually took third on a Gearhart single to left.

Veitch then picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to left scoring Franks making it 2-1 Mustangs.

WO-S’ lead did not last long either as Corey Sheppard led the top of the second off with an infield single and took second on a passed ball.

Brett Ramsey then advanced Sheppard to third and took first on another infield single.

Sheppard then got caught in a run down during a suicide squeeze attempt but a WO-S error gave him time to scoring making it 2-2 and Ramsey moved all the way to third.

Orangefield freshman Derreck Evans then laced a RBI single to center scoring Ramsey for a 3-2 Orangefield lead.

The Mustangs got the run back in the bottom of the second as Adams led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball.

With one down Taylor Bonnin hit a RBI single scoring Adams from second and tying the score at three runs each.

Orangefield did not make it 4-3 until the top of the fifth when Statum led off with a double to the center field fence.

Felts then with one down smacked a RBI single to right scoring Statum.

The Mustangs return to action Friday when they travel to Bridge City while the Bobcats will host Hardin-Jefferson.
