Vidor overcomes tough road to move on

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

VIDOR — Six games in 10 days.

A schedule like that may be more suited for a MLB team but not a high school squad.

That is what the Vidor Pirates had to face just to get into the Class 4A Region III playoffs this season, a first since 1965.

The Pirates start their playoff push tonight against Barbers Hill at 7 a.m. at Lamar University’s Vincent Beck Field with Game 2 slated for 7 p.m. Friday at Baytown Lee High School. Game 3 specifics are still yet to be determined.

This past weekend showed the kind of character that Vidor Coach Kyle Green has grown to know the Pirates have inside.

Friday saw the Pirates get blasted by District 22-4A champion Little Cypress-Mauriceville 10-0 in five innings at Pirates Field.

The loss left the Pirates in a tie for the last playoff spot out of the district with the Nederland Bulldogs, a team known for making the playoffs year in and year out.

To add to the fire, the game was to be played in Nederland.

All the Pirates did was go out and beat the Bulldogs 9-0 to secure the spot.

“That was a tough situation,†Green said. “Six games in 10 days can take a toll on anybody, especially a coach. The situation came down to that LC-M physically beat us up. It would have been easy for us to lay down but we showed a ton of character. Our kids were back up at the school at 9 a.m. the next day to head to Nederland. I have been telling them all year that if we take care of us, everything else would fall into place.â€

Now Green expects to see a Barbers Hill team that features two left-handed pitchers who both can hit the 85 miles-an-hour range with offspeed pitches to keep batters off balance.

“It is not going to get any easier from here on out,†Green said. “We have to continue to play fundamental baseball. We can’t make mental mistakes. This is a special group of kids. We don’t have that one guy who is going to hit three or four homers in a week and don’t have a guy who is going to throw 87. What we do have is a group of guys who go out and do the best they can.

“As for as pressure, I am sure there will be some butterflies on Thursday. Not many of these kids have even seen a playoff game. We will have some jitters but hopefully we will get rid of those early.â€

Two well coached teams, one with tons of big game experience and one with the deer in the headlight look.  What is the only thing that could happen?

THE FIGHTING "GREEN" PIRATE BASEBALL TEAM IS GOING TO SHOCK THE WORLD.

Turn up the heat Kyle and don't look back!  Doesn't everyone love the underdog?  Doesn't everyone love a success story? Wouldn't it be great...
