This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up cited people familiar with the discussions who said most or all US tariffs on China are likely to be lifted as the two sides close in on a trade deal. Among its concessions, China has pledged to speed up the timetable for removing foreign-ownership caps on car ventures, and reduce tariffs on auto imports below the 15% rate. Beijing would also boost purchase of US goods, including an $18B natural gas purchase from Cheniere Energy (LNG). As talks continue over enforcement, plans are being discussed where officials will hold bilateral meetings to adjudicate disputes. US Trade Rep Lighthizer has said if these do not produce an agreement, the US could impose tariffs. Other says the US is pressing China to agree not to retaliate, which would be a big concession from Beijing. The WSJ noted less progress on other issues, including China’s industrial policies and subsidies to state-owned firms. China has pledged to remove “market distorting subsidies”, but some in the administration do not consider that sufficient because Beijing doesn’t provide numerical figures on its subsidies, nor specify which ones it will eliminate.
