The only pitcher for Carthage so far is David Rollins....  He's a left handed pitcher ace for Carthage.

Taylor has a man on first, one out......and will have to dig to keep from being 10 run ruled.

Carthage cruises to 10-0 win

By GABRIEL D. BROOKS

Saturday, May 19, 2007

NEW CANEY — Carthage's David Rollins cruised to a complete-game shutout as the Bulldog offense overcame a slow start in a 10-0 win over Taylor in a Class 3A Region III quarterfinal Friday at Adam Dunn Field.

Rollins struck out seven Ducks and allowed four hits to improve to 11-0 on the season. The junior left-hander kept the Ducks grounded, inducing eight groundball outs, while yielding only three flyball outs.

Garrett Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple, while Jace Hamilton was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Leadoff hitter Austin Smith hit 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

"Our kids did an incredible job of two-strike hitting and two-out, RBI hitting," Carthage coach Shawn Schumacher said. "We got a lot of RBIs with two outs and that's a killer."

Early baserunning miscues were the only issue that kept Carthage from building an early advantage. The Bulldogs' three first-inning outs all came on the basepaths, but after three innings of scoreless baseball, Carthage broke through in the fourth.

"I think the case was more me trying to be too aggressive on the basepaths. We've been very aggressive all year ... and we're going to try our best to put pressure on teams on the basepaths," Schumacher said. "We may run into some outs, but I think that pressure finally (got to Taylor)."

Carthage (28-0), ranked No. 1 in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association's Class 3A state poll, scored three runs in the fourth on one of Hamilton's RBI doubles and on RBI singles from Matt Akin and Austin Smith. The Bulldogs scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before doubling their six-inning output in the seventh.

The play of the game came on Austin Smith's seventh-inning, two-run single, which turned into a four-run circus. Smith's single, which came with the bases loaded, went between the legs of Taylor's center fielder and rolled all the way to the wall. Hamilton, Akin, Taylor Harris and Smith scored on the play to make it 9-0 Bulldogs.

Garrett Smith added an RBI triple three batters later to give Carthage its second 10-run margin of victory in as many playoff games. The Bulldogs beat Cameron-Yoe 11-1 in the five innings in last week's area playoff at Kilgore's Driller Park.

Taylor concludes its season at 20-6.

Carthage advances to a Region III semifinal and will face the winner of the Bridge City-Needville series. Needville led Bridge City, 1-0, entering Friday's game two of the best-of-three series.
