Looks like Jasper got scr**ed on the call that took away what would have been the game winning run in the 7th inning.

Here's a picture-

Hornets fall to Bulldogs in 10 innings

Hudson down 1-0 in regional semifinals, series resumes in Jasper today

By Gary Stallard

The Lufkin Daily News

Thursday, May 24, 2007

In a game that needed 10 full innings — and several strange plays — to decide, the Hudson Hornets for once found themselves on the losing end of a late-inning comeback.

A post-season of oddities and wild rallies continued for the boys in maroon, this time with the Hornets falling to Jasper 3-1 in Class 3A Region III semifinal action Thursday at Garrison Field in Lufkin.

The Bulldogs' Malcolm Bronson drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th; and a throwing error on the play allowed the third run to score, dropping Hudson into a 1-0 hole in the best-of-three series.

Jasper pitcher Travis Reagan tossed a complete-game beauty, striking gout 12 Hornets and scattering just four hits over 10 innings. His counterpart, Hudson's Nick Rhodes, also went the distance, allowing eight hits but keeping the Bulldogs off home plate by picking off three Bulldog runners and starting an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play.

By no means were the three pick-offs the only weird plays. In the fifth, Hudson loaded the bases on a leadoff single from Aaron Jarvis, a fielder's choice from Bobby Byrd and a walk from Wayne Ramsey. Daniel Musick then lined a single to left to score Jarvis, but a base-paths mix-up led to the Hornets' second out instead of leaving the bases full. The inning ended with runners stranded at second and third.

Then, with the game tied at 1-1 in the seventh, Jasper appeared to take a 2-1 lead on a long double with two aboard by Bulldog hitter Ryan Ellis. But John Bradley was called out for missing the third base bag on the play, leaving the score tied.

Meanwhile, both pitchers continued to roll, sending the game into the extra three frames. In the top of the tenth, Robert Shellhammer reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on Taylor Hart's double to right center. On that play, Hornet rightfielder Jeremy Pounds made a great throw back to the infield to prevent a run.

But Bronson, after attempting a bunt, lifted a long foul ball down the left-field line. Jeremy Murphy made a good over-the-shoulder catch, but was unable to get the ball to the infield in time to prevent Shellhammer from scoring. An attempt to nail Hart at third sailed into left field, and the Bulldogs left Lufkin leading the series 1-0.

"We had our chances," Hudson coach Glen Kimble said afterward. "But like I tell our guys, nobody in baseball hits every single game. We have to regroup and get ready to hit the ball tomorrow.

"We've been in this position before, so we're not worried. We just have to go to Jasper and even this thing up."

Game time in Jasper is 4 p.m. The third game of the series, if necessary, would be played on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Central.
