5A DII District 12 Predictions "The Big XII"

Call this district the “Big XII”

Coaches all about offense and average defense.

This district has 2 tiers;

Tier 1: possible playoff teams Lee, BH, Crosby, Ned, PNG

Tier 2: Homecoming spoilers Dayton, Vidor, SF

In order of finish.

Barbers Hill - I feel this is the year for Barbers Hill. Injuries at the QB spot hurt them back to back years. A good mix of different classes pushes this group to the top of the district.  The best defense of the Big XII (depends on the secondary) expect #48 to be the difference maker. Some key losses at skill positions including a guard playing QB (Definitely not Kyler Murray) but expect a few under level guys to fill in. Underlevels were excellent in the last few years and count on a few sophomores to earn a spot on Friday nights. OL should be typical with the big OT making a difference. Don’t believe anyone will go undefeated in the district but believe Barbers Hill will come out on top. Time to reap the benefits of the highest paid coach in the district with district championship followed by second-round exit.

PNG - Life without RJ and RoshonsBigBrother on the forum begins. New QB is very good at times but consistency is the worried talk around the peace pipe. Its been 3 years, can BF call plays without a running QB and the IPad? I know the PNG Faithful will be excited about a handoff but disappointed with only scoring 40+ points a game (first world problems).  Returning 4 of 5 OLineman with 3 of them being All-District, this should be the strength of the Indians. OLine can't play like years past and have RJ bail them out. The defense will be an average district defense, which will be a downgrade because they were above average for the district last year with 7 all-district players. PNG could end up in the 1-4 spots but they are definitely a playoff team. PNG could be district champs if the O Line and QB play well but I see them in second.

Baytown Lee- Is this real life or is it just fantasy? I’m caught up in this mudslide of underclass talent of the last few years. Time for them to step up and make the playoffs. Returning the offensive MVP to complete the best backfield in the district leads the way for the Ganders to make the playoffs just in time for the CCISD to consolidate into 1 school. End on a high note like George Costanza. Depth is always the issue with the Ganders but this year they overcome. Playing Nederland at home and not on the slop called bulldog stadium (No bond will ever happen) will allow their offense to make plays this year and be the difference between the 3rd and 4th spot.

Nederland- Always the toughest team in the district and could be district champs when its all said and done. Expect the full Monte with a quarterback being a better passer. Nederland always can run the ball and should have a couple of backs that lead the district in rushing (besides Vidor). Defense is always coached well but the loss of the Defensive MVP and a few other key players will raise some questions. But Nederland is great about replacing kids on defense and already groomed a few freshmen last year.  Expect a slow start to the season but a strong finish. New QB not as good as a leader as the old QB and probably makes a few more mistakes that why I have them at 4.

???Crosby??? - Hard to place Crosby right now. We just don’t know how the new coaches recruiting class will be this year. And they’ll be at a disadvantage with the least number of coaches in the district when Rio takes them all and they can’t hire enough. I hope the best for them because the forum is a lot better when Crosby is playing well. I love the Code Red and looking forward to the next Mantra. They have some kids who can play let's see what the new coach can do with them. Tough schedule to start the year might have the wrong kind of momentum going into district. They finish out just out of playoffs unless injuries affect one of the top 4.

Dayton - Can Dayton be that bad again? I believe they are the best of the rest but as long as Liberty is doing well, Dayton will not make the playoffs (I think there’s a correlation). New QB will be more athletic and with the chance to make some big plays with his feet and the ability to throw it up to a really good sophomore receiver. Losing the most imposing defensive player is going to be tough. Not sure how the new defensive coordinator will respond. Not a lot of depth on the team puts them into the second tier of the district. Don’t pick them as your homecoming game, they’re going to find some wins in the district this year and could be against one of the top teams. Almost got BH, Crosby, SF, and PNG last year.

Santa Fe- How are they in district 12 again? Not much to say about this team. Haven’t seen them in the past and missed the one game against them this year. But did have a chance to watch an under level game. And it was tough to watch. Santa Fe had two great players that lead the team to the playoffs and they’re gone and so is the coach. Expect the new coach, that's going to be a huge hire in the next few weeks, to throw the ball around way too much and not experience success. But he’ll be paid very, very well. The good thing is they finish second to last in the district because Vidor doesn't know what the forward pass is.

Vidor - The ol’ Slot T offense. Put all of your players on one side of the ball and hope your offense can control the game enough, recover enough onsides kicks and go for it on 4th down to have a chance to win at the end. The Vidor way is coming to an end with no more Quirantes coming to save the team. They do return all of their All-District Players (3) and their best athlete, the quarterback will be back. Don’t look for him to play quarterback this year though but he will be very good at linebacker. At one time there was Matthews for President signs in Vidor and if they win multiple games in district, they should do it again. And I’ll vote for him in 2020.

    • SMH Silsbee will not tank against WO-S. Just won't happen. Mustangs were just that much better than Silsbee. Besides, #3 seed basically has to play the same teams as #2 seed other than first round. From what I saw with Sweeny and Brookshire, BR was the better team than Sweeny.
    • For sure.  They can take it to anyone if they want it, and if they play with the intensity that they had last Thursday.  Last Thursday game reminded me of the last 2 season's teams.
    • The numbers on those charts reflect all age groups and not just HS age Students. Another thing to remember,  some parents of school age kids might work in neighboring districts and choose to have their child in the district they are employed.  Not always the case but it is something to remember
    • We have a new apartments complex being built in Mont Belvieu. You’re going to need to update that chart.😂
