LC-M's Sicktich to compete on elite USA A1 volleyball squad

LITTLE CYPRESS — Christine Sicktich, who will be a sophomore at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School next year, recently made the USA Volleyball Girls Select A1 Roster.

Almost 1,400 players tried out for the elite unit and just 50 were honored spots on the team.

It’s the top program USA Volleyball offers for volleyball players born in and after 1992.

SIcktich had an amazing run as a freshman, helping long-time coach Vicki Castino and the Lady Bears to a playoff berth out of District 22-4A. Sicktich, the Newcomer of the Year on the All-Orange Leader Team, was 400-of-481 on attack for the Lady Bears. She notched 171 kills and 40 blocks. She was 356-of-383 on serves and served up 58 aces. She also posted a whopping 491 assists and 291 digs.

“It’s a tremendous accomplishment,†Castino said. “The best players in the country try out for that team. There are almost 1,400 great players and to be in that elite 50 is something very special.â€

The group will train and compete in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from July 16-26. After the training period, the group will be divided into four teams and compete representing USA Volleyball in the 2007 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships July 22-25.

“The kids will miss Christine with all the summer leagues and camps going on this summer but we’re all like, ‘What the heck, go for it Christine,’â€, said Castino. “You don’t get to do something like this very often. We’re all really proud of her and we can’t hardly wait for the high school volleyball season to start. I think we’ll have a good little team.â€

Rod Wilde, assistant coach at University of Wisconsin, will serve as the program head coach.
