Sean was a great OL, but he did not choose to play college ball.  His brother David was all-state DL for the Bulldogs and all-american DL for SFA.  I was speaking with Coach Walkoviak once and he said David was the best Defensive Lineman he had ever Coached.  So I vote for Gibby :)  (both of them--not to mention the oldest Jeff who would knock you silly)

Also from Jasper that were great I can remember were

James Bevil OL (U of H)

? Viator  OL (TCU)

Chris Hunt RB  (don't know if he ever played college ball)

Fred Hunt QB (great athlete)

I can't remember the RB name right now, but we had one go over 2000 yards in the early 2000's.  He probably has the school record.

Curtis Hafford LB  Best I have ever seen from Jasper.  Witherspoon was a better receiver than LB IMO.

I am not 100% but  I believe Terrance Davis played WR at SFA and later Arena ball.

There were a ton of guys I totally spaced (Hafford and Bevil, especially) and I got David and Sean Gibbs confused. Hopefully someone can remember who that tailback was on that 2001 squad. He was GOOD. Terence and Ben both played well in the arena league, but prior to that both had cups of coffee in the NFL.

Where's Shane Dronett?

Where's Shane Dronett?

That was my question and what about Jason Mathews?  Come on 10 years in the league ought to count for something.  Looks like this is a pup that does not know some of the history.

How can you mention Mathews without talking about Shane Dronett?

I knew Jason in college.  Dronett went to the other school.  I guess the question is how did two guys who made it to the league not get on that list?  But the Dronett question was quoted, I did not see the sense in repeating it.

Posted

I did not notice that.  I saw both of them in HS.  They were two big boys.

The other school huh  :)

Yeah, that was an intense game between those two.  They never played up the hype.  Jason was like whatever.  It was fun to be around.

I can't tell you the number of times I heard the Dronett wrestling the alligator stories from the announcers when he was at UT.  I forgot about Mathews.  No offense to the original poster but there are a lot of folks that played prior to the past 2-3 seasons.

Pretty good list......I'll throw a few more names.  Brian Doss at qb stepped in as a soph and had tremendous speed, Danny George DL short but mean, Stanley Rhone fb/rb he and McGuire were the best backfield tantum, Sid Wilson wr great hands, and Randy Matthews qb he willed Silsbee to that tie in Jasper in '88 that gave Silsbee the district championship.

Randy Matthews was the best QB that I have ever seen at Silsbee.  I do not ever remember Craig McGallion playing d-line.  I thought he started a in side LB for 3 years.  I know he beefed up and played nose tackle at UH, or I thought.  Either way he would make this list.  McGuire was good but only played one year due to injury his Senior year.  He played JV as a soph.

Good lists though, especially seeing names like Skinner and Hunter.

Like I said in the thread, this list is based on not just high school performance but college and pro.

Randy Matthews was a very good qb but I have to give the knod to Bobby McGallion, He holds all the qb records at Silsbee and he went on to be the starting qb for Bill Yeoman's Houston Cougars for a couple of years.

Craig McGallion did play defensive line for Silsbee his senior year, played lb his soph. and jr. years. He did go on to play d-line at UH.

Sid was a good reciever, but I think Desmond Doss brought more to the position and as for Garrett, well he played several years for the Pittsburgh Steelers at that position, winning a couple of Super Bowls.

As for Gary McGuire, yes he did not play his senior year at Silsbee due to injury, but I could not leave off a player after playing his four years at UH, leaving the school as the school's all-time leading tackler and at that time the SWC's leading tackler.

What happend to Doss last i heard he was at Blinn i wathched him play and he had good speed and one of the best verticles from a high school player an awsome WR another question how many touchdowns did he make his senior year
