2019 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS

VIDOR PIRATES

2018 Record: 4-6 Overall, 1-6 District

7th Place in District 12-5A-II

The 2018 season started off well enough for Jeff Mathews' Vidor Pirates as the Pirates took their first three games of the season to head into district play undefeated.  However, the District 12-5A-II schedule was not as kind to the Pirates as they limped to a 1-6 district mark.  However, 2019 seems to have optimism in the horizon as a talented corp of skill players return to put the Pirates squarely into the playoff picture.

Head Coach: Jeff Mathews

Assistant Coaches: Darrin Fletcher (Defensive Coordinator), Mike Trahan (Offensive Coordinator), Jeremy Gray, Drew Charlton, Alvin Credeur, Tony Bradley, Rodney Burks, Randy Richard, Sean O'Bannion, T.J. Light, Blake Peveto

Offense:

A bit of experience both in the backfield and on the line return for the Pirates in 2019 as 7 starters return.  Returning to trigger the Vidor Slot T will be junior quarterback Quintin Root.  Root will be joined in the backfield by senior fullback Zach Seigriest, Cree Simmons and senior tailback Brad Nunes.  Split end Logan Bell and senior tight end Gage Galloway, who along with Nunes are the best that Coach Mathews says he has ever coached, will lead the Pirate receiver corp.  They will be working behind a line which will feature returning starters senior quick guard Ammon Hutson (2nd team all-district) and strong guard Josh Taylor.  They will be joined by strong tackle Tyler Webb and quick tackle Dax Welborn.

Defense:

A fair amount of experience returns on the defensive side of the ball as six starters.  Returning starters, senior defensive end Colby Smith and junior nose guard will be joined up front by defensive end Jordan Smith.  The linebacker corp will be a particular strength for the Pirates as Galloway and junior middle linebacker Mason Brown will be joined by outside linebackers Ty Vincent and Cole Myers and senior linebacker Kane Sanchez.  Senior cornerback Josh Wright (2nd team all-district) and senior strong safety Dayton Whitmire anchor a Pirate secondary which will also include senior safeties J.C. Marshall and Cayden Strother and cornerback Nathan Bullard.

Special Teams:

Galloway will handle the kicking duties for Vidor while senior Jackson La Pray will handle the punting.  Returning duties will be determined during fall practice.
