2019 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS

NEWTON EAGLES

2018 Record: 15-0 Overall, 5-0 District

Class 3A, Division II State Champions

The 2018 Newton Eagles ran undefeated through their schedule with no team coming to within single digits of the Eagles until their semifinal date with East Bernard.  A week later, the Eagles would take down Canadian to claim their second consecutive Class 3A, Division II State Championship.  But in May, the tragedy that everyone dreaded came as Head Coach W.T. Johnston lost his long battle with a rare complication from a lung transplant.  Many think that with the loss of their inspirational leader, as well as the loss of offensive starters Darwin Barlow and Josh Foster and key assistants, that the chances of a third straight championship are dim.  But new Head Coach Drew Johnston, who has spent the last two years being groomed for the job, 11 returning starters and the small city of Newton appear ready to spring a big surprise on the State of Texas.

Head Coach: Drew Johnston

Assistant Coaches: Tabor Westbrook (Offensive Coordinator), Jason Hicks (Defensive Coordinator), Jeff Parks (Running back), Chase Copeland (Offensive Line), Doug Samples (Wide Receivers), Marcus Carver (Defensive Line), Ricky Rodriguez (Defensive Line), Jeremy Russell (Secondary), Corey Jenkins (Linebackers)

Offense:

Six starters return to the Newton multiple wing offense in 2019.  The likely candidate to step in and lead the Eagle offense will be senior Dom Seastrunk (1st team all district at wide receiver in 2018).  He will have quite a contingent in the backfield to assist him as seniors Kevin Watson (2nd team all-district), Zach Gulley (2nd team all-district at wide receiver) and Val Fowler (12-3A-II Offensive Newcomer of the Year) all return to key the Newton rushing attack.  Also look for Gulley, as well as junior receiver Dre Shawn Spikes and junior tight end Bryce Westbrook, to figure prominently in the Eagle passing game.  Senior center Avante Burnham (1st team all-district) and senior guard Jamarion Samuel (1st team all-district) will lead an offensive line which will also feature junior tackle Hunter Amburn.

Defense:

5 starters return to the vaunted Newton 7 Diamond defense in 2019.  All state senior defensive end James Sylvester will lead a defensive line which will also feature senior defensive tackle Micheal Clark (1st team all-district), Spikes (Defensive Newcomer of the Year) and sophomore defensive end Antwain Hunter.  The secondary will be a particular strength for the Eagles as Seastrunk (2nd team all-district at cornerback), Watson (2nd team all-district as outside linebacker), Gulley (2nd team all-district at safety) will lead a defensive backfield that will also feature junior Robbie Phillips.

Special Teams:

Special Teams positions will be finalized during summer camp.
