2019 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS

SHEPHERD PIRATES

2018 Record: 6-5 Overall, 2-2 District

3rd Place in 9-4A-II

 

The Shepherd Pirates were placed in a new district, but with the same result as the Pirates qualified for the playoffs for the fourth year in a row.  In 2019, Head Coach Miles Robinson will count on four returning starters on offense and five returning starters on defense, which includes veteran lines on both sides of the ball, in order to make the playoff run an even 5.

Assistant Coach: Jamin Savell (Offensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach), Kenny Washington (Defensive Coordinator), Cedric White (Offensive Line), Jeremy Bennett (Running Back), Cameron Wendell (Defensive Line), Chris Elmore (Defensive Ends, Outside Linebackers), Josh Meeker (Linebackers), Ben Goffney (Tight ends, Blocking Backs)

Offense:

Four starters return to the Shepherd gun wing offense in 2019.  Senior Dezmon Yates will take over as the Pirate quarterback. Senior running back Kenan Turner and senior blocking back Kolton Burton (2nd team all-district in 2018) will get plenty of work in the Shepherd backfield.  Look for senior Josh Weeks to also get time in the backfield.  Senior newcomer Chayce Jimmerson will be counted on to make plays from his wide receiver spot.  Senior tight end Cody Chreene will also be counted on in the Pirate passing game.  Senior offensive tackle Justin Capps return along with junior guards Brice Major and Ja'Kiry Brown to man offensive line which will also include sophomore center Mason Walters.

Defense:

Five starters return to the Pirate 4-2-5 in 2019.  Senior Jonah Bellard (2nd team all-district) will lead an defensive line which will feature Ruben Berrun and senior Clay Watson, as well as senior defensive end Gideon Johnson.  Inside linebackers Turner (1st team all-district) and Jerritt Whitmire (2nd team all-district) return to round out a stout defensive front.  Senior safety Ben Goffney and sophomore Alonso safety De Leon will step in to anchor the Pirate secondary.

Special Teams:

Senior Joel Valdez will do the place kicking for Shepherd while junior Carlos Renovato will do the punting.  Returners will be finalized during summer practice.
