But the young Lions again went winless in district play for the second year in a row and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year. To change things, Kountze has made a number of changes as Athletic Director Duane Joubert has opted to concentrate on the boys' basketball program and bring in Todd Paine, a successful assistant at a number of programs (West Brook, Hamshire-Fannett, Lumberton among them) to guide the Lions' football program. Paine will rely on six returning offensive starters, five returning defenders, and a corp of talented youngers to restore the roar in Kountze. Head Coach: Todd Paine Assistant Coaches: Chris McFarlane (Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator), Justin Jackson (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks), Brady Byars (Offensive Line/Defensive Line), Brandon Hillin (Secondary/Wide Receivers), Brock Hanks (Linebacker), Joe Potts (Running Backs), Ben Barrington (Middle School/Video) Offense: Six starters return to the Kountze offense, which will operate out of the spread. Look for senior quarterback Jeff Washington and sophomore quarterback Hunter Read to both see time behind center. Sophomore running back Demond Hamilton will pace the Lion rushing attack. Senior receiver Dre Akbar, junior wide out Matt Walters and senior tight end Shamar Thomas return to a receiver group that will also feature sophomore Zach Paine. Senior Austin Everitt will lead a young offensive line that also returns sophomore Johnny Cowart and will include senior Caleb Flowers and sophmores David Cowart and Trenton Phillips. Defense: Five starters return to the Kountze defense, which will operate in a 3-3-5 set in 2019. Cowart and junior Taylor Jones return to man the Kountze defensive line. Sophomore Robert Perez will return to lead an young group of linebackers including juniors Ely Whisenhant and Layne Bevilaqua. Akbar and Thomas will patrol the Lion secondary along with sophomores Read, Paine, Blayne Roebuck and Elijah McMahon. CardinalBacker Posted July 30, 2019 Report Posted July 30, 2019 Is it just me, or does Kountze play 4 out of five District games at home?
