crazy_cajun02 Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 Just a little piece of experience, If you get cut or scraped in saltwater and it starts turning red even a little bit, GO TO THE HOSPITAL...........I waited three days and if i hadn't then they would have had to admit me. 2 shots in the butt later i was sent home for 3 days bed rest and was told not put my leg lower than my heart. I also have to take a shower every 4 hours with dial soap.
tvc184 Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 The Vibrio vulnificus bacteria lives in warm saltwaters and is particularly nasty. It is one of the so called "flesh eating" bacteria that tend to spread very rapidly. Any infections can be critical but some of those contracted in saltwater can cause severe injury or death in short order. Anyone seeing an inflammation after being in saltwater should seek medical assistance immediately.

643 Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 I end up cut up on most a trips offshore from one thing or another mostly from Gill plates, teeth or ?? I wil first wash my hands with soap, then rinse well with Peroxide and finish up with a soak in Epson salt. Although from what I read Vibro is more prevelant in the bay systems I take no chances offshore.
crazy_cajun02 Posted July 9, 2007 Author Report Posted July 9, 2007 yeah it is more prevalant in the bay system, if you want cut down on the gill plate cuts get you some boga grips, they save the hands tremedously. Ciguatera is more prevalant offshore but your not gonna contract that easily unless you eat the wrong fish.
643 Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Eating to many Kings will make you glow in the dark, or so I've been told
crazy_cajun02 Posted July 10, 2007 Author Report Posted July 10, 2007 yeah i think that is just from mercury levels in pelagic's. Ciguatera is commonly found in barracuda but i think some people from galveston got it from a grouper caught at the flower garden's. It has scientisit all in an uproar about how common it is becoming. It really hasn't been that bad in the gulf but they are worried it is moving this way with warmer water.
