Officials tweak game times for regional

By Jeff Byrd

[07/17/07]

The Babe Ruth 16-year-olds' Southwest Regional may be something new for Vicksburg, but many of the teams coming in to play have had their share of experiences.

One of the first things to change for tournament host Marshall Upton was Friday's opening day game times.

“Originally we had it starting at 2 and going 2, 4, 6 and 8 but that wasn't enough time between games. So now, we're looking to start at 11 a.m. on Friday,†Upton said Monday before going over instructions with the two local teams that will make up the eight-team field. The tournament will use a double-elimination format.

Mid-County, Texas coach Jimmy Collins said the original times wouldn't have worked.

“If they started at 2 (p.m.), they'd be playing the last game around midnight,†Collins said Monday by phone from Nederland, Texas.

Collins knows a lot about how these regionals work.

“I've been to about 20,†he said. “I've mainly coached our 17-and-18-year-olds teams, but I have the 16s this year.â€

MC 16s open Ruth regional

By Dave Rogers

The Port Arthur News

Mid-County Babe Ruth is like the United Nations without all the subplots and demonstrations.

People from different lands — well, different cities — join together in a common cause — in this case winning baseball games and advancing to the World Series.

Mid-County’s 16-year-old Ruth Stars will represent six area cities this weekend at the Southwest Regional tournament at Vicksburg, Miss.

They open play in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament at 8 p.m. Friday against the host Vicksburg Gators.

Other teams in the tournament include Tri-City Texas; Vicksburg Flashes; Vidalia, La.; Lonoke, Ark.; Fort Smith, Ark.; and Central Mississippi.

Lefty pitcher Trae Hester leads the way for the Mid-County team.

The Vidor sophomore, newcomer of the year in District 20-4A last spring, was named most valuable player of the East Texas State tournament, in which he pitched six scoreless innings and rapped out five hits.

“It was a blast,†said Hester, who was winning pitcher in Mid-County’s 7-1 championship game win over Wharton. “I was a little nervous pitching the championship game, but I wasn’t too worried about it.â€

Hester is one of two MC All-Stars who played on Vidor’s first playoff team in four decades, with Chad Sims being the other. Sims pitched six scoreless innings in a 7-4 Game 2 win over Bay City.

Vidor has four players on the MC roster: Chaz Bruce and Jesse Griffin are the others. Nederland has four players — Justin Vidrine, Jordan Pitts, Conrad Roberts and Cameron Collins — and Port Neches-Groves has three in Travis Weathersbee, Matt Woods and Austin Sangster.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville has a trio on the team in Matt Johnson, Taylor Thompson and Josh Garza. Ryan Bearden and Taylor Eaves are from Hamshire-Fannett. Bridge City provided Blake Snyder.

Jimmy Collins, manager of the 16-year-old Stars, says players from 13 area high schools participated in the 16-18 Senior Babe Ruth League this year, with West Orange-Stark, Orangefield, West Brook, Central, Kelly, Hardin-Jefferson and Warren joining the aforementioned schools providing players.

“I got to meet a lot of people from different schools I played against,†Hester said. “You get to be friends. But usually, you keep (high school) team secrets to yourself.â€

Vidrine, a junior second baseman for Nederland, called this year’s 16-year-old Stars “probably one of the most talented teams I’ve played on.

“It’ll be fun to play against these guys in district next year.â€

MC All-Stars near World Series

Special to the Leader

The Orange Leader

First baseman Chad Sims slugged two home runs and knocked in five runs in all Sunday as the Mid-County Senior Babe Ruth All-Stars advanced to the finals of the Southwest Regional tournament.

The tournament champion qualifies for the 16-year-old Babe Ruth Baseball World Series at Bentonville, Ark., Aug. 11-18.

Mid-County was a 10-5 winner Sunday over Tri-County, Texas, a regional team like Mid-County based halfway between Houston and San Antonio.

The only teams now left in the tournament besides Mid-County are teams the Southeast Texans have already beaten the past three days.

The host Vicksburg team played Lonoke, Ark., in an elimination game late Sunday. The winner of that game plays Tri-County at 3 p.m. today for a spot against Mid-County in the 6 p.m. championship game tonight.

Because it’s a double-elimination tournament, if Mid-County were to lose tonight, a second championship game would be needed Tuesday morning.

“Our team is getting better every game,†Mid-County manager Jimmy Collins said. “Now we have to sit back until all the teams beat up on each other to get back to us.â€

Mid-County has outscored its three opponents here 26-10.

Sims, a sophomore from Vidor, went 4 for 4, adding a single and a double to his two dingers. Taylor Eaves, the third baseman from Hamshire-Fannett, added two doubles to what was an 11-hit Mid-County attack.

Bridge City’s Blake Snyder was the winning pitcher and Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Taylor Thompson relieved him in the fifth inning and finished the game.

“Our pitching’s been very good and our defense has been real solid,†Collins said.
