OF’s Katie Sanders headed to Huntsville

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

A year out of basketball was too much for 2006 Orangefield graduate Katie Sanders.

After sitting last year out, Sanders is headed to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville to start her college career in the same place her high school playing days ended.

Sanders’ was apart of the 2006 Lady Bobcats team that lost to eventual state champion China Spring in the regional semifinals.

“I just wanted to get away,†Sanders said. “I approached them and I love the campus. I am just ready to play again and am very excited.â€Â

One thing Sanders will not have to worry about is buying new clothes to fit the Sam Houston’s colors.

“They are orange and white,†Sanders added referring to Orangefield’s color scheme.

Sanders is the sixth player to sign with Sam Houston State women's basketball head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols for the 2007-08 season.

Sanders was a four-time All-District selection during her career at Orangefield. She was a Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State player as a sophomore, junior, and senior.

As a senior in 2006, Sanders won the Texas Class 3A three-point championship and was a member of the all-tournament team at the Class 3A regional held at Sam Houston's Johnson Coliseum. She also was honored as Orangefield High School's "Most Athletic Girl."

"Katie is an outstanding shooter and tenacious defender," Nichols said. "Her work ethic and willingness to be coached are going to make her a solid offensive threat for the Bearkats."

Former Orangefield Coach Sondra Ancelot called Sanders “a steal†for Sam Houston and that is saying a lot since Ancelot is now an assistant at Lamar University, a conference rival of Sam Houston.

“Sam Houston just got a steal,†Ancelot said. “They got a great person and a great point guard. I don’t think it took long for Katie to miss the game of basketball. She is a lucky girl to get that second chance. It is awesome except we (Lady Cardinals) have to play against her.â€Â

Sanders spent the last year coaching several different youth teams in Orangefield and cheering younger sister Kristy on who was a senior last year for the Lady Bobcats.

“I just couldn’t get away from basketball,†Sanders said. “It is great to coach but I missed being out there myself. It is going to be weird playing the first time against Coach Ancelot. It will certainly be different. I have talked to her recently and she taught me so much about the game of basketball.â€Â

A National Honor Society member and honors student, Sanders graduated third in her class in 2006. She attended Lamar University last year, earning selection to the Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma Freshman honor societies.

Sanders joins Leasa Ailshie, Kristen Ford, Deltrice Daniels, Ausha Hartley and Jameisha Todd to make up the 2007 Sam Houston State women's basketball recruiting class.
