Not a single coach has ever won a state championship without talent. It just does NOT happen.

So, coaches that win state always gets the talent.  And those coaches that never make it to the big dance never get the talent throughout their career.  What rotten luck!   I'm going to post a factual scenario that debunks the "it's all about the talent" thought.  Stay tuned!   I will admit, though, if a bad coach has 22 animals then, yeah, he'll probably win.  If the bad coach doesn't screw it up!  But, how often does that happen?  But, again, the thought that only certain schools always gets the talent is a little far fetched!

Good coach no.  Elite coach yes.  Very few have what it takes to win a state championship.  If it's easy, then every coach would win some.   But, the subject was Briles and Finney.      Briles = Elite Coach      Finney = Good Coach    Oh, by the way -- This year's matchup:      Briles  47    Finney  28!

Finney's star got bright turning around Teague and then going to Hull Daisetta and got a couple of winning seasons. Kinda disappeared quickly after that because he couldn't sit still. Dude bounces around a lot...

I don’t measure a state champion ship as a mark of a good coach. Players win games period. Coaches are there to  develop athletes and teach them proper technique. Off season training and a winning culture. Discipline is by far the most important thing that a coach can teach the kids. Does anyone on here think that Art Briles would have made  Evans from North Shore  sit out the state championship game over a cell phone?. I highly  doubt briles would sit any star athlete out. Is Briles a good coach yes he is but I wouldn’t want my kids to play for him for the simple reason he doesn’t hold kids accountable.  North Shore coach imo is a upstanding guy and should be commended on holding his players accountable and that’s what good coaches do.

I’m not saying you’re wrong.. but it sure makes it easier when you still have your starting QB (Virginia Tech) and the opposing QB (Texas) is injured.

That's true. But still that is hard thing to do. You want to play the best 11 to win the game. Your starting qb could go down in the first quarter so now your relying on a second string running back. Now that's not snubbing the 2nd string guy he ran for a 100 yards and would start at LCM or any local school around here lol

No question.  But the decision is easier made when you have other weapons.  Plus.. from what I understand, the kid was a problem all year.  He missed the first half of their semifinal game the week before because of taking the ACT.  To be honest, I’m not sure I would’ve let him go to begin with.

They are loaded with talent, But I still think its not a popular decision. Dealing with parents can be a real headache if you know what I mean. Any ways I guess  all the rumors about Crouch  retiring is not true.

So is an all American quarterback a requirement?  Or comparable skill player.. I'm trying to grasp your thinking.  Which you're entitled to, as mentioned above.  I personally think it's silly to think that a team will win a state championship based solely on the head coach.  But that's me.

Answer the question I posed earlier to AAW.  How long will it take Westerberg to win one at BH?  The chances of him staying there for a long period of time are probably far greater than the chances of Briles staying at MV 6 or 7 years.

Dont argue with these dong loving idiots of Briles. They dont know real Football like you and I.

Good point.  And I probably don’t know football compared to a lot.  Basketball is actually my thing..I just like football and the conversations in the football thread are more entertaining. but I do know that the equation for winning is players + coaches + schedule.  It takes all three.

Wasn’t Finney at Maud before Teague? Had a good run their with the three TCU commits.

First, PN-G during this time, in my opinion, was more than a "One Trick Pony!"   An Elite coach could have won at least one Title.  But,  let's say they were only a One Trick Pony.  I feel an Elite coach would through the years up to these two years would have developed athletes around this QB to get them in position for a Title run.  That's what Elite coaches do.

Well.. it seems as though it comes down to pretty much one thing.  I say that Tom Westerberg (elite coach according to your definition) won consecutive state titles because of Kyler Murray.  It seems that maybe you think they were won because they had an elite coach.. and not because they had a kid who starts in the NFL right now.

Luckily for us, you’re theory can be tested.  According to your logic BH should be winning the state championship before too long.

You are right.

Maud to Teague to Mesquite Poteet to Hull Daisetta to Mount Vernon to Winnsboro

Heck of a coach everywhere he has been, like Johnny Cash, he's been everywhere

Average stay is like two seasons........ that screams “lets get him”..

Did Westerberg win a Title without Kyler Murray?    There's a great chance he will win a Title before he leaves.  So far, he's got them to the point of winning the out-right District Championship.  That hasn't happened in a while.

I agree Barbers Hill has improved but to make a deep run in 5a is hard thing to do without studs. Allen has 6000 to choose from and it was probably easier. A coach told me once larger the school you work at you can have average coaching Due to numbers are helping you. 4a down you need the best coaches you can get to get more out of  the kids that are lacking talent.

He won a title 4 years before Murray.. then 3 in a row with him.

So a great chance, huh?  We’ll see. So they’ll continue winning the district championship and just keep getting further into the playoffs until they just win it all?  I’m betting you wouldn’t bet on that.

There's no guarantees of anything.  He has already earned his Elite status.  Nothing will change that.  But the fact is that he won without Murray!   And BTW, if it only takes one star, then why didn't PN-G win with their good one?

I never said he only had one star at Allen.. 6A schools are loaded with D1 commits.  He just also happened to have the best quarterback in the history of Texas high school football (statistically) who happens to be an NFL starter right now.

And.. he no longer has to prove anything since he’s already reached your definition of elite? Hmm.. wouldn’t that just prove that state titles can’t be won without stud players?
